Carfax vs. Autocheck

Both sites offer the same service, but find different records..?

I have a friend with a Autocheck account, I ran a VIN# for and it was clean. Autocheck only showed 2 events Title, Registration Renewal

I ran the same VIN# on Carfax (w/out an account) just to see how many records will show up, Carfax listed "9 records found" !!

Unfortunately I can't see what those 9 records are. Anyone have any idea how these sites work, or have a theory on this inconsistency?

For comparison, I ran my own VIN #, autocheck showed 2 records, Registration renewal, Title.. Carfax listed "2 records found"

It's only a tool. May not be completely accurate.

Junk in -> Junk out...

Thats because dealer service records are sealed and if there is no police report for an accident it wont show up on carfax either.

That's completely false.

Every oil change, every service, every transmission replacement was reported by my 1st dealership on my 1st CL-S.

I challenge you to go to a dealer for a used car and get the service info......

I just bought my car and according to the acura dealership due to new privacy laws it is illegal to release service info without the initial buyers consent.

Of course they aren't just going to hand out old service records from another customer. Those records have payment information, address, driver's license numbers, etc.

But dealers can and do report service to CarFax. It isn't illegal for it to be reported.

You're trying to compare apples to oranges.

They are allowed to report it to CarFax and Autocheck. That's my point!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If they weren't allowed to the entire system of CarFax or Autocheck would be completely worthless.

Then your dealer doesn't report to CarFax.

Why is this so hard to comprehend? CarFax isn't some automatic data mining program that searches all databases on all automobile facility servers. If your dealership, or body shop, or repair center, or gas station doesn't report to CarFax then the information won't be there!

Are you missing the part where it says "SERVICE AND REPAIR FACILITIES"

Guess what? Your dealership's service department falls under that category.

I won't buy a pre-owned car w/o service and warranty records. If they won't show, then I don't buy. I have all of the records for my CL-S, from 3 different dealerships in two states. They can show you the records with the person's name/address blocked out(unless it's an autonation dealership, then they're lying no matter what they show you).

This was an acura dealership and the guy told me straight up due to new laws they are no longer able to divulge the service records of the car. But hey it is plausible they were lying to me but I highly doubt it especially since I was in uniform and that usually tends to grease the wheels for me not saying its impossible but in my past experiences they usually give me a little edge because i am military.

The guy that gave me mine was the mgr. This was about 2 yrs. ago. Still, I'm currently looking for a new car and if I don't see the records, it's a no sale. They were probably full of it, and my respone would be that if you want me to pay more for this used car than most people pay for a new one, then you better break with some info...
