I put BMW because I'm biding my time looking for a solid E36 M3 that's been well taken care of ... It's not easy to find one priced where I want to pay and owned by someone that clearly knows what they were doing.

I just can't bring myself to pay $14k for a car that's "worth" $11k just because the owner has an attachment to the car.

You have the right idea, and there is a M-3 here in Portland with less than 100k for $12,000...but.
It is going to be next to impossible for you to find a unmolested M-3 in that price range (not to mention the issues that you will be plagued with that have been discussed in the other thread). In fact the only sport sedan of any worth (that I would buy) in that price range is a base G-35 ('03-'06).

With most of them (M-3) on their third owner (and abused by the last two) & rolling up on 150k, they will have you pulling out your wallet every six months for work needed as a result of being that old. I'm a fan of the E36 M-3 as it was a dream car of my youth. So was a 911, and that car was a drain on my wallet as well. Take it from me, pay more now...or you will pay more later.

Don't I know it. Well, if I have to wait then so be it. I've found a couple of two owner cars (first were leases, for example) ... There are certain things I'm looking for (like someone smart enough to replace the bushings on the rear shock towers) because that will indicate to me they took owning the car seriously ... But then there are things that I can't predict like a new driveshaft or CSB. But at least I can do some of these things myself.

I just have a feeling that a $12k 90k mile car is going to need a few K in maintenance. My hope is to find something in the kind of condition that I can drive it through the fall and then spend the winter doing preventative maintenance on since this will be a garage queen for me.
