a buddy of mine has a car that has not moved an inch in a year and a half. we are going to try to get it running this weekend. what all do you think I should do first?
battery, oil change and probably brake fluid right, but what else?
oh it is a 95 (I think) jetta.

Where is my super sauce?
Air freshener.
Make sure no little critters made the engine bay or the air intake their home.
No brainers --> Check all fluids, connections, hoses, belts, etc. Check tire pressure. Brake fluid, battery, and oil change as you suggested.

Sounds like you got it pretty much coverd to get it started. If he is going to drive it alot he may need to get everything re-greased up like the front end and possibly get new sparkplugs and wires.
My 88 Accord had lots of carb problems when we first brought it back from the dead, but the Jetta being a 95 or 96 I would guess it is fuel injected.
Good luck with it!
