Car for a College Student

Right now i currently drive an 06 TL and i will be going to college come august. But i came to thinking that i didnt want to take my tl to school and this summer i was thinking about buying another car to go down to school with which is going to be about 4 1/2 hours away. I was thinking about spending 5-7K. Either on an SUV or a rear wheel drive car that i could have a lot of fun with even while im at home on the twisties or something. Do you guys have any suggestion on what i maybe should get?

1990 Caprice Classic. Its got rwd and a v8.

You could probably pull mad donuts and you could trash it all you want. Then when you come home to your TL, it will feel like a million bucks.

Get a used car, something you won't mind getting slightly dinged. It's college and people may do stupid shit to your car. I recommend a 2k3 Nissan Altima 2.5 S.

I had that car in college and it can carry a lot of girls in it...trust me

EDIT: I just read your post in its entirety , so I suggest a used Toyota 4Runner, or Nissan Pathfinder.

I wouldn't bother. What are you going to do, garage your car for 4 years? Why waste the money in depreciation when you could be driving it that whole time. If it gets a little dinged up, that's okay. Repairing dents is cheaper than spending ~10k (or more) on another car that's not even close to as nice.

or a SC300 5sp.

but if you're going to be moving a lot, a good toyota pick up is always very practical and i'm sure will come in handy a lot.

Im going to come home every now and then...why would i bring a 35k car to school so it can get messed up and get dings....My car is like my prize possesion, im not going to drive it down to school to get dings and stuff...Im gunna work a lot all summer and try to get something around 5-7k that i dont have to worry about as much and when i come home to see my car it will be heaven all over again just like when i drove it home from the dealership.

It's the best getting back into your car after driving something not as nice for a while.

Get a Miata if you're gay...if not get a 240 or MR2 like others suggested. For SUV, you can get a Pathfinder for cheap. Or maybe a CRV? Oh, and I'm kidding about teh :ghey: comment.

With all due respect, I don't understand the purpose of wasting another 5-7k on a beater. Then you'll have to pay for registration, insurance, and up-keep on two vehicles. Why not just take the TL to college? I don't think I see what the big deal is. Didn't you buy the TL to drive it? Aren't cars meant to be driven?

Driven but not messed up with dings and puke stains and having people asking to borrow your car to do certain things...my car will be driven my lil bro will be getting his permit soon so it will be driven its not going to just sit and rott...I would rather have my car in safe hands with my parents and maybe my little brother, than with drunk college kids that could care less about their vehicles

I would never take a $30K+ car and park at a college environment. When I went to college, half of them didn't care how they park or treat their car. Cars are meant to be driven, but do you want to have it dinged and scratched by some careless people? If he can afford a beater, all the power to him. I'd do the same. Though I wouldn't spend that much on it. 5k would be the max

see i don't understand this, first off if it's ur car you shouldn't be like here borrow my car i know i wouldn't no way in hell, i don't care who you are. And for people puking would not be aloud in or my car would not be used at all. You have a brand knew 30k car, drive it while you can enjoy it, ding and dents can be fixed. i don't know why you want to spend another 5-7k on another car and have to keep with upkeep and insurance, to me thats a waste. Use that 5-7k on something else

I dont understand why letting my parents "borrow" the car while im at school is a bad idea especially when they are the ones that paid for it....makes no sense

True, dents happen anywhere and it sucks. My last year in college sucked because my front bumper was cracked by an idiot who couldnt park (i have pictures, its pretty funny) and I was rear ended in a fucking drive through by a drunk kid, which was funny also. While you cant avoid the former I'm sure the latter doesnt happen as often when not in a college town

The only one who is responsible for "puke stains" and accidents from people borrowing it is the owner. Frankly, I've never had anyone ask to borrow my car, and even if they did, I wouldn't let them drive it unless I were in it. Further, it's quite easy to prevent nasty spills inside of the car--avoid situations where that might happen. I have yet to have someone borrow my car or puke in it here at school. Why? I'd have none of that.

I still think you should take the TL to college. I don't see what the big deal is.

All just my of course

Naw my parents dont really care....I dont know i just thought it would be a good idea to get a beater to take down to school because of all the dings, dents, and accidents that happen down at school, just didnt think i would want to have that happen to my TL. Even if you can repair it, it can get quite expensive depending on what it is that happens.

not unless if someone else hit you, then it's thier fault. A car is a car, it isn't going to be perfect forever. It willl have wear and tear on it. It will get dents, there isn't shit you can do, it will happen. Take the car and have fun with it, just take care of it and be a little more careful to reduce the possibility of anything happeneing.
