Can engine oil go bad?

Can engine oil go bad?
I realize driving , particularly hard acceleration, would reduce the life of one's engine oil, but let's say for example, the car is only driven 1000 miles in 3~4 months. Should it be changed at this point, or can it wait for another couple of months?
Any expert advice?

If you look in the manual, it will probably say something like 6-7k miles and 6 months for normal usage. And 3 months for severe usage. I don't think the oil will go bad in 3 months, but it does get dirty. Especially if you take frequent short trips.

Change engine oil every 3 months is something jiffylube wants you to believe.. Many new cars these days recommend every 5,000 (severe usage) or 8,000 (normal usage).
