Honestly, I do think the 2G DSMs are fast and sexy....provided none of that Fast and Furious crap is done to it.
As mentioned there are 350Zs in that price range but if a back seat is a need, I would even consider a Pontiac Trans Am WS6.

Here's a 1JZ/2JZ hybrid motor in an SC300. My buddy built the motor himself
And yes, he puts down about 550 WHP without tuning. He knows that if tuned and boosted to what the engine is capable of, 750 is not unrealistic..... He has already put a bigger turbo than the one shown... Oh god this thing is fast....

I LOVE MR2s but I'm sorry, the MR2 is THE car you don't want if you work on your own cars and you want a reliable car. Even changing the intercooler on them is a PITA. My brother's 2 has a vacuum leak that couldn't be found by two different dealerships, a friend's mechanic father with decades of experience under his belt, and even the MR2 guru in our area could not find it.
The block is bulletproof..... but if you like cars that are easy to work on I recommend you stay away from MR2s.

I would question the "mr2 guru" on his knowledge, I built and swapped my motor myself without any problems and I don't consider myself anything close to a mr2 guru. I've swapped many engine's on civic's and accord before so I was confident with my car, but the mr2 was much more challenging!
Mr2's reliability, it's a toyota, it comes down to how you maintain it and how you drive it.

^^ I was deciding between the 300zx-tt and the mr2 when I bought my mr2 and all I hear from people is how they break often, like the DSM's; and when I test drove one I opened the hood and thought to myself f*ck that! Those engines are jammed in there.

The Z is definately a bitch to work on, but with the T tops... I love it. That and I had always been into the Civics, Subi's, and such. The Z (like the Supra) was and still is more of a big boy car. I guess I must have got lucky, or I just treated her well. I let her go with over 145K and never had a problem.

Honestly, late model used Nissans usually come with very attractive price tags....or if not, very negotiable prices. 
More towards the topic, a $13k 350Z in decent shape with moderate mileage is performance deal that is pretty hard to pass up.

Are you serious?! They were direct competitors. 2 door, 2 seater (b.s.+2 option for z non turbo), rear drive, 6 cyl (v6 in z and inline in supra), both 3 Ltr, turbo, the supra came with 20 more hp, targa for the supra, t top for the z.Now just b/c they didn't use a Z in The Fast and the Furious, doesn't mean the supra out classes it.

I've had my LS1 Z28 for over a year, and its given me no problems at all. Just a rear axle cover that doesn't leak, but rather seeps.... I've been too lazy to take it apart because I don't wanna clean up the mess, just top it off. And no, LS1 SS's are not faster than the LS1 Z28s. If he wants to mod a car, an LS1 F-Body is both cheap and very responsive to mods. And once he puts in $1000 for springs and Koni shocks, he'll be able to hang with modded STis and Evos. Ask me how I know. 
I got my Z28 for 11.5k over a year ago, and in these times you could probably find a higher mileage one for 8k or a nicer one for 12k. Add a DD cam/heads package for around $2500 and you've gained 50+rwhp. Or you can get longtube headers and a tune for about $1000 and get 30-40.
There are guys who daily drive LS1s til its over 200k if that matters. I'm sure we'll see even more as they get older.
