Angry California compliant catalytic converters

I need to find a California compliant catalytic converter for a 95 BMW 318i. Anybody know where to find good prices on them? Everywhere I've checked they're around 350-400 because they sell you the converter with the exhaust pipe attached. I've seen the part on the car and it's just bolted to the piping, no need to replace the entire assembly, just the converter.

Where have you guys gotten your converters cheap?

It's gonna be tough. Legislators in this wonderful forward thinking state thought it would be good to implement more and more bullshit that makes it tougher on manufacturers to produce parts. Rather than allowing aftermarket universal catalytic converters that work just fine, if you have a car in California it must have one that is specifically approved for use on your vehicle. Most likely if there isn't an aftermarket application available for your car yet you will have to get an OEM part.

You can try to go to a shady exhaust shop, even though there are rules and requirements in place you might be able to get them to install something for a decent price.

^^ Agree with the above, although you will have a little more leeway because your car is Pre-OBDII. Here's a link that (mostly) explains it.

Honestly, 300-400 for a new Cat doesn't sound that out of line.....

You're not OBD II so it won't be as big of a deal. You won't have to spend nearly as much money. Any car sound catalytic converter should work but a lot of BMW ones will have the pipes and the cat - makes install a hell of a lot easier. And that is a decent price.
