Is buying a pre-owned MDX a good idea?
I came across a couple MDX's with about 75K on it for under $17K. What do you guys think? Is it worth buying? Seems to be in good shape. I'm going to take a look at it this afternoon. There is a MDX and a MDX Touring for around the same price. The MDX is an 02, the touring is an 03. Mileage is about the same. Neither have navi.

I don't think it's a bad purchase. You're getting a $35k vehicle for half price... yet you'll still be able to get a ton of mileage out of it. Personally I'd probably look for a lower mileage vehicle, but I don't ever think it's a bad thing to buy a pre-owned Acura (except maybe CL or TL), Lexus, Toyota, Nissan, Infiniti, or Honda....
If you can get a good deal... let some other sucker take the depreciation hit

I know several people with the 2002 MDX and none of them had problems. Two of the families had TL's as well... and those did have problems.
Now, I haven't been on any MDX forums, but I think the problem really hit the CL and TL hard and spared the other models. You may want to visit some MDX sites to see if anyone had any issues before you buy anything...

yup. ive heard problems with the first few years of the MDX. but the updated ones, you dont realy have problems at all. my dad has the 05 MDX. he drives everywhere with it all the time. all over the country too. he never had any problems. i think he already has over 40K. and he only had it for a little over a year. hes also a hard driver. he keeps his foot welded to the floor most of the time (hes a typical nj/nyc driver). i dont know if i could say that the previous ones are that great, but i do love the freakin mdx's.
you could probably research better if you posted here:

weren't you also considering the murano?

on to the next one...
My family has an 02' w/navi with 60k miles on it and it's a great car. They're selling it right now for only $16K actually
They love it, but yes tranny issues are something to be mindful of past the 100k mile mark...

My dad has an 03 MDX, no issues other than recurring condensation in the headlights. I think he just hit 50k on it with no real problems, but he's been talking about getting something new

We have a '03 with 55K and no issues. It's been great. Reliable. Plenty of space.

hmm.. ever thought about subaru wagons?? i love them.. the previous gen legacy wagons, or even the wrx wagons.. those get pretty roomy. if youre looking into the murano, which arent really that roomy at all, i dont see why you cant go for a subie.
ever consider a used element? i4 so you dont have to ever worry about any transmission issues.. plus theyre pretty innovative vehicles. except for the boxy and plasticy looks. if you can get passed that i think theyre great cars. haha

Or equally, a used RX330? Both really aren't lookers from the outside, but inside, the Lexus walks all over the Acura.

01 and 02 had problems. The 03 still required the "oil jet fix," but was a completely redesigned unit compared to the 01/02. Very few failures with the 03; we have one guy over on another forum I frequent with 188k on his 03 Pilot (slightly different unit).

I still may go for it. The price is a lot better than the Lexus. I looked at a couple. I hate the body. It's cheaper than the 04 Murano. And it's about $2K more than the GC's I saw. Tomorrow I'm looking at a couple Pathfinders.
I saw another couple MDX's. 03 Certified with 60K for about $18K sticker. I'm hoping I can get them to come down a bit.

I think you might be able to find a pretty new GC with a good amount of options for that amount...any particular reason you arent going with the GC? I know a few people with them and they seem to be bulletproof

Oh Hullow
my family has an 04 mdx... the car is driven by my step mom who basically put 35k+ on it in 2 yrs... it runs beautifully no problems what so ever except for regular maintenance... plus its a lot better on gas than most SUV's out there ... (avg about 18mpg)... i can only speak for the 04's which is when i believe they refreshed the MDX .. so if there are problems with the older models... look for an 04 you wont be disappointed
