Boxster S or FX35???

I need your advice, please.

A co-worker is offering his 2001 Boxster S equipped w/ hardtop, tiptronic, litronic xenon, etc. w/ 7500 miles, ~15 months warranty remaining, and in excellent condition (no accidents) to me for $38,000.

On the other hand, I equally like the FX35 AWD equipped w/ touring and sport packages for MSRP of $40,840, but which I hear can be had for $250 above invoice (or ~$37,500) in the Bay Area, CA. Infiniti is also offering financing for 36 months at 1.9%.

I know they are totally different vehicles but given that I have no preference for roadster or an SUV, what you choose?

I'd take the infiniti - not a huge fan of the boxsters, especially at those prices.

you can get something better for that much loot than both of those cars.


The porsche is tiptronic, so its auto, so I wouldn't get it.

INfiniti FX is decent, but i'd rather have an X5 for that much loot.

two totally different vehicles. The decision really comes down to what you need it for. Leisure/travel/Family, etc

Buy a new Z roadster for 38K! It'll hang w/ Boxster S (.1 slower to 60) for 25-30K less.

yeah but have you seen a Z roadster with the top up???

if you ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY MUST choose between THESE TWO rides...... I say get the Boxster, hands down. If it was an FX45, I would have said get the FX.

The one person I know who has a Boxster (S) has been trying to pass it off on everybody he knows. He is not a fan, but that doesn't mean it's a bad car necessarily.

If I were looking to get a little roadster style car I'd look into the M Coupes - big fan of those.

i'd take the Boxster S over the Infiniti. With only 7500 miles and the hard top included? good deal. as long as it's the S and not the regular Boxster.


FX35 over the X53.0 too.

agree, make sure its the Boxster "S" model..... if its not, get the FX.

If money's an issue think about insurance and cost of ownership.
Will you have this as a daily driver or a second vehicle? If second, def. the Boxter S. Otherwise you'll regret not getting the FX next time you do groceries

I'd never buy a Boxster, but that's just me, "S" or not. Too many guys around here with SPS own one.....I'd take a Cayenne over a Boxster, and the Cayenne goes against everything Porsche stands for.....



I love the FX however

Thanks for the input! Yeah, I know I'm the polar opposite of post whore.

Yes, it's a Boxster S. I am only considering it seeing as the original sticker he paid was ~$60,000, and he's offering it to me for 60% of the value for a basically new car. Plus, it's got dual tops and a bunch of other options. The interior is virtually new. I think I can drive it for a couple of years and not lose too much.

My insurance will be an extra $800 per year to insure the Boxster as a secondary car. The CLS will remain my primary daily driver. Either way work is only 3 miles away from home, so commuting is not an issue.

I also looked into maintenance for the Boxster, and it seems to be reasonable so long as I follow the recommended intervals of 15,000 miles or 2 years, whichever occurs first.

I love the FX but I don't want to take the hit on the depreciation, which I have heard is quite steep.

I may just preserve cash, and lease a 2004 350z touring for $2,000 down and $502 per month for 36 months...

Seriously, the S isn't that bad, but some people think the regular boxster is :ghey: The price seems good.

If I had 38K to spend, I'd probably buy something else.

Did I mention that some people think the 986 is :ghey:

Unless you plan on selling it in 3-5 years. If you want a long life out of the car, I would go no more than 5k even on synthetic oils.

Yet another reason I stay the hell away from used cars, you never know how they were maintained, unless the owner documented the hell out of it, and then if he did it himself, then how do you know he's not lying?

yeah, autos for sports cars are gay

BUT at the same time once you're on the highway(or 45+mph)- 5 speed manual vs 5 speed auto, 5 speed auto pwns, once that torque converter locks up, no slippage IS great , that doesnt account for 6 spd vs 5 spd

but until then, bend over...

Boxster S is nice, but I would look for a 2000 911 C2 for 38k, you should be able to find one with fairly low miles ~15k and nice options. The 911 really is an incredible car, much more reliable then pretty much any other sports cars out there.

Yeah I've seen it top up, I have one! And in my opinion, it looks no different than a Boxster top up. Besides who the hell cares what any 'vert looks like top up? You don't buy it primarily to drive it top up!

Actually, they are discounting the hell outta FX 45s. A loaded FX35 is as much. No one simply buys expensive Infinitis. Go take a harder look at a new FX45. Dealers are DEALING!




















But shit, I'd get the Boxster S without a doubt.

If you don't know the answer then you probably don't need either one LOL!!!!

The FX handles great FOR AN SUV. But I'd bet a Corolla would out slalom it.

Seeing that the Boxster S isn't very popular a choice considering the price, Ill hold off on it. As most of you have all said, I have many options for $40k.

I do need a second car, but it's not urgent. I just got caught up in over the past couple of weeks thinking that my co-worker's Boxster S was to be had for a great deal at 60% of its original value for something so new and well taken care of. But then again, why buy something for the sake of it being "cheap", right?

I do love the Infiniti FX as well, but the thought of getting :bananahump: on the depreciation is a downer.

As I said before, I'm now thinking about leasing a 2004 350z 6MT Touring -- $2,000 down and $502 per month for 36 months. Fine print: MSRP $33,840 includes destination charge. Actual capitalized cost $32,897 includes a $550 non-refundable acquisition fee ($795 non-refundable acquisition fee for residents of New York and Rhode Island). Monthly payments total $18,210.96. At lease end, purchase for $19,288.80, plus $150 purchase option fee (except KS & WI), plus tax, or pay excess wear and tear plus $0.15 per mile for mileage over 12000 miles per year. Is this a good deal?

Thanks for all your advice. It just seems so intimidating dealing with car transactions here in the US vs .

If I had my choice of roadsters for less than $50G, the Boxster WOULDNT be high on my list. In other words, I've got no love for the Boxster. (My personal list: Z4 3.0, C5, S2000 2.2L, Mazdaspeed MX5, MR-S Spyder then Boxster.)

As mentioned before about the FX35, when you option it out it can be a bit pricey (~$47G) but can be acquired for less than MSRP. And we're talking FX35 not FX45. (Heck, even the Murano can hit $40G fully loaded.) Personally, I'd still go with the MDX which can be acquired for under $43G fully loaded (although the body style is scheduled to change in less than a year).

But if the book value on the on the Boxster is higher than the price he's asking for, I'd be inclined to get it just on principle.

I agree but, the NSX is not really a roadster (assuming he wants roadster-style two-seater). AND even used, it still costs more than a Boxster (unless you find an automatic NSX, which tends to be cheaper on the used car market).

You guys are fuckin hilarious comparing a 350z to a boxter, much less an FX series truck.
There is no comparison, just because a the 350 is as quick, doesn't mean it's as nice a car.
My brother just bought a Boxter S and I'll tell you there is a reason it's 60k. The craftsmanship and fit and finish on the Porshe is way above the Infiniti, you can't compare it, sorry. The drivetrain is superb, not to mention how much respect the Porshe garners when driving around town.
Everytime I drive my brothers car, people are always looking, it's a beautiful car.
Here in Vegas, I wonder which one will bring more pussy, hmmm,
a 350Z or a Porshe?
