Diesel power has claimed another significant scalp – in the shape of the next-generation BMW Z3. Company insiders have told us it's almost certain that the car – likely to be called the Z4 – will get the impressive 3.0-litre engine from the 330d.
In addition to conventional auto and manual gearboxes, BMW will offer an SMG sequential unit with steering wheel paddle controls. Styling cues have been taken from the Z8 roadster, with a classic three-spoke sports wheel and simpler controls. The interior will be much larger than the cramped current model's, too.
The petrol Z4 will use the 3.0-litre straight-six from the Z3, while 2.0 and 2.5-litre units are also tipped to see production. They'll appear alongside the British-built Valvetronic 2.0-litre four-pot from the 318.
