Exclamation BMW 1M vs. M3 Direct Comparison Review by Motortrend

Now dont think im biased. I really like the 1M and its a bargain for what you get in terms of performance. Downside that it will be really hard to get one. Production ends in December 2011.

My local dealer is only getting 4 or 5 yet they have 10 people on a waiting list. Not sure how that will work..

The fact that the M3 has an available sedan version makes it the winner (vs the 1M) to me.

I disagree.

Having owned m3 from E30 all the way to E92 now. Each generation i like the car less and less.

Same with the M5. From E39 to E60.

I simply does not like the gain in weight. The M3/M5 are no longer agile and fun to toss around.

While the V8 and V10 sounds great at high rev. Low end its punchless. M3 has become too civilized that even my wife can drive one.

I haven't driven the 1M yet. But i have been driving the 135i M sport. 1 series is more agile and so easy to toss around. It just sticks to the road so much better than M3. 1M would not doubt be much better than my puny 135i.

Cute or not. I don't give a damn. But 1M is probably the most closest thing to the E30 M that BMW has made.

Plus- I love the stick. While its not as fast shifting as DCT. But i take my 6 speed manual any time of the day.

I just love driving my 1.

Nice vid. Horrible review. The 1M is not a cute car. It still looks like a man car to me. A younger man, but still.... It's performance is all grown up. I don't see any technical reason not to choose this car over the M3. Oddly enough if I were in the market I'd pick the less capable, better looking (opinion) and more rare Audi S5 over both.

1M is only a one year run. He can always get a used one or wait for the new M2.

Its like 53-54k for a fully loaded one. Yeah, i'm assuming that it'll be super hard to get one at the sticker price.

It's grows on you. I think the 128i M-sport is one of the best cars BMW makes right now in terms of basic(ish) but fun driver's cars (other being the M3). All the attention goes to the 135i and now the 1M, but those turbocharged engines...they're not at all where it's at IMO. Even the next M3 with be turbocharged which will be fairly disastrous.

^ I'm sure BMW will figure it out pretty damn well. It's not going to be disastrous imo.

Btw, I've driven a 328i with a stick before... it's a VERY FUN car for sure. I loved it. It's actually pretty quick too.

I got a ride in a 1M with Steve Dinan at the wheel earlier this week at a BMW track day event I was at with my dad (e39 M5) up at Mosport. I can report, at least from being a passenger while the car was being driven hard around the track (Steve can drive!!!), that the 1M is pretty damn sweet.

I wish I could afford one.

^ Did Dinan do anything to upgrade the cooling on the 1M?

Only reason I ask is that there was an M3 owner who took a 1M on a track and he said he went into limp mode. Not sure if i believe him.

The 1M he was driving was completely stock (there were two there that day, both of them were stock orange/red ones). He did a bunch of laps in it, and it was fine, so take that for what it is. Basically he took you out for 2 hot laps, then came in to drop you off/take someone else back out. He did two sessions. There were 27 people there I think, as well as some Pirelli reps etc, so assuming everyone went for a ride (most did, but I dunno if everyone did),...that's maybe 50'ish laps (assuming most, but not everyone went out) at Mosport, broken into two sessions. He wasn't holding back during the laps. It was a nice sunny day, but not that hot,...maybe 20 degrees C or something like that.

He said they have some stuff coming for the 1M soon, but wasn't specific.

There was an M6 with the full Dinan deal done to it, putting out like 630hp or something. That's including the 30k engine etc. That went into limp mode in the afternoon for the SMG Transmission or whatever (I stuck my head in and saw some Tranny message on the screen), but the dealer guys restarted the car a few times, and as far as I know it was fine after that. That was a customers car.

There was a guy there with his Alpina B7 too LOL. That thing is NICE.

Completely different cars. I would rather walk than DD an Exige (well, almost), whereas the 1M would probably be tons more comfortable and still hold its own on the track.

We'll see. I have a hunch V8 M3's will regarded as vastly superior though once the hype and spin wears off and everyone realizes the F32M it's just a fatter 1M.

Eh if you're talking about that dude on bimmerpost who drove the M3 and 1M back to back in a track session...he said it suffered from significant heat soak and power pulled back a little, but not limp mode. Of course that's going to happen if you drive a turbocharged engine hard in any heat on pump gas. The ECU does that to keep the engine from blowing up.

It's a car that's made to be driven hard. BMW should have done something to fix that.

What are you talking about?

The torque on the turbo 3.0 is addicting. No turbo lag and power is instantaneous. What is not to love with fat torque band?

128i is a decent car. But it simply has no power. Buying a one is to drive the hell out of the car. I won't give up that torque to get a 128i

I'm not sure how I feel about all these turbos being put into cars. I understand why...but I don't know if anything can beat a naturally aspirated massive 6.2 liter engine (C63 AMG).
