Bad mpg? Tips on how to pump gas !

I think it's more the way you drive also.
I "coast" to a stop, meaning if i'm driving and i see the light turning yellow, i let off the accelerator and slow it down. some people continue to step on the accelerator and then switch over to the brakes, even though they know they're going to have to stop.

Needs more Lemon Pledge
I get gas at Costco.
If I don't like it, I can turn around and get a refund!
I also have to buy a five pack of tankfulls......

I've noticed no difference between filling up at Shell/BP/Exxon and at "discount" stations (Sam's Club, Kroger, QuickTrip).
However, somehow in Athens here, I do notice I tend to get lower MPGs when I use the Shell near me instead of driving the 10 minutes to the QuickTrip on the edge of town that is known for having the lowest prices, but maybe that's just my mind playing a trick on me.
And when I asked the dealer to take off the dealer emblem on the car, they responded "sure thing", so I guess most dealers will take them off if asked.

i really don't care about the brand of the gas at all. i just pump from whichever station that is the cheapest or more convenient. what matters most in determining MPG is how you drive, not the gas station.
i don't believe in any of that aftermarket fuel cleaner stuff. sure, you may notice a 1-2mpg more but again, it comes all down to how you drive, day and time, and temp. i don't see the logic in spending $15 on a fuel cleaner to get an extra 1-2mpg. that extra $15 would've gotten me more miles!

And tires are all the same too?
Yes most of the gas comes from 3 main refineries, but then the gas station companies get it, there is when they add the "additives and/or detergents" of their own(if any) which in turn gives you better mpgs(which is most important to you) and performance. Especially the BP Shell and Chevron brands.
So you just said
"i don't see the logic in spending $15 on a fuel cleaner to get an extra 1-2mpg. that extra $15 would've gotten me more miles!"
The logic is that the cleaner just paid for itself by getting you the more miles....hello?Also improving cheap/crappy gas. Even if you found some crazy $15 bottle of fs cleaner(shouldn't spend any more that $10). You really only have to use (1) bottle probably every 5k miles. But the better companies (ex again BP Shell and Chevron) have really high quality of gas with a lot of comparable additives/benefits so you wouldn't have to add the extra fuel system cleaner products as much.. Its cleaning your engine for you as well. Potentially help the engine run longer.

I don't know if I buy any of that stuff, with the exception of the gas truck stirring up sediment. Maybe the pumping slow thing, but not so much the temperature of the day. It can't make more than difference, if that. I'd be interested in someone proving/disproving this theory though.
Yeah, I hate it. I die a little inside when ethenol goes in my car. I know it doesn't really hurt anything, but I always want the good stuff.
In the grand scheme of things it's just one tank of gas. It's not going to hurt anything at all. They're a business and are trying to save money however they can.
Haha, truth. A lot of people need to adopt this mindset.

I dont know if it just the Acura Dealership out here but, u know when you buy a car from them, and they fill it up with gas they put 87 and go to Arco.
A while ago me and my cousin and sister were @ Acura getting something done to one of there cars and we were talking to a salesman about 91 octane and they said O when we put gas in our cars wether it's the gas station or in the back we just put 87 in it. I was like .
So basically when a customer buys a brand new or used car from there lot there not getting 91 there getting 87...

as soon as I see a yellow or a red up ahead, i put that bitch in neutral and just coast.

it's a car-drive it
It is funny how drivers speed past me and then jam on their brakes at the lights. I lay off the gas pedal and most of the time do not have to brake. (one of the reasons why my brakes are lasting)

The difference is both in the detergents used by the station and most importantly the age of the gas that station is getting. The major brands get fresh gas, the cheap brand names get older leftovers. How else do you think they're able to sell it significantly cheaper. You always get what you pay for.

Yeah, I hear ya. But it doesn't hurt the car, and the dealership is trying to cut costs however they can. I'm not saying it's "right" or that I would approve, but I can see why they do it. Honestly, with all the things that stealerships do, if this was the worst of it I would take it in a heartbeat.

Actually, you should leave that bitch in gear and coast. Put it in neutral and the car has to use gas to idle the engine. Leave it in gear while coasting, the injectors shut off, because the wheels are now driving the engine.

awhile ago, someone did a test and it was believed that you save more gas while coasting in gear and not in neutral. since then, i've always tried to do it whenever possible.

I've been buying the cheapest convenient (meaning near my house) gas since I've owned my TSX. 154k miles later zero engine problems, no excessive oil consumption (I have yet to have to add oil in between 5k changes), and still average ~30 MPG on the highway.
When I lived in San Jose, that was Rotten Robbie's. Once I moved to Tracy, it was Costco. However, the lines at Costco has become outrageous recently, so I go to 7-11 (next cheapest). I could go to Arco, but they have a 45 cent surcharge if you use plastic, so them vs 7-11 is a wash in my neighborhood.
It's not worth waiting in line at Costco for 15 minutes to save 3-5 cents a gallon IMHO. It used to not be so busy...I guess the increase in gas prices is the cause.
I always buy premium (91)...so

I used to buy from Quick Trip all the time because they don't over jack up the price of premium fuel. Their mid grade is 10 cents higher that regular and their premium is 10 cents higher than mid grade. But now, Quick Trip is making their premium fuel 12 cents higher than mid grade now...

Hmm I have been taking advantage of sunoco in Orland park because sometimes the 106 octane rings up as regular premium gasoline, but I think they have long fixed that issue now.

the reason I asked is because my aunt wanted to baby her 98 accord back in 1998...so when she bought it she was putting in 89 (mid grade) or 91 (premium) and the car asked for 87 (regular)...she was getting crazy knocking and fuel economy....she called honda and they suggested using regular....she switched to regular and ended up saving $$$ and perhaps her engine.....

and i know the H6 3.0 engines here require premium, but considering the markets are completely different, the engine is probably tuned for slightly higher power there, and their best available gas

being that you are in the rising sun land, is't the "premium" fuel at the pump (local economy wise, not the base) there like 96 or 97, or so?

and btw it almost sounds is that the US government is bringing the gas over from here, and it's octane ratings, considering i think that most people on base probably have vehicles from the US itself, so the octane rating doesn't matter to most personnel on base
but i am assuming you put in at least 10 gallons worth of gas per fillup, i will say at $2 per gallon adds up real fast, and you can actually buy quite a bit of octane boost for that type of $ (probably a couple bottles worth...)

The storage tanks are underground. I doubt the temperature in the tanks vary much, if at all between morning or afternoon to make any impact on the amount of fuel you'll get

- When you are pumping, DO NOT squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. Keep it at the slowest mode, which will minimize the vapors that are created while pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return, and if pumping fast, some will become vapor which gets sucked up and back into the underground tank.
Now I know.

How much vapour are we talking about really? Our winters are pretty cold, so I just want to get the gas in the car as fast as possible and get out of the cold.
