Ehhh...Hybrids are overrated, just get a 5spd Civic or Corolla and you'll get near MPG as an Insight. And with much less parts to break and cheaper to maintain in the long run.

Buy a used Civic HX
You'll have decent power (up to 110 hp I think) , less windnoise, a much more comfortable ride, save a lot of cash upfront since its used and get 45+ mpg. While it is a coupe, you at least can fit people in the backseat on occasion and have a decent sized trunk.
Insights have a VERY loud and rough ride. To me there are far too many compromises made.

I miss my 03 CL-S :(
On top of what everyone has said (and personally I agree with youngTL on the 06 civic hybrid), if most of your commute is highway, you won't be getting the most out of any hybrid. When you're on the highway, the electric engine turns off, and it's the internal combustion engine that's powering the car. On some hybrids like the Accord, the gas engine will shut off some cylinders to save gas, but for cars like the Insight or Prius, you'll be basically driving a cheap, uncomfortable car in the highway with a puny engine.

Thanks so very much for the insight...no pun intended...LOL
I used to have 1996 civic hb dx 5spd mt...ugly car but modable and hella good gas mileage...thanks for reminding me!
I will look into the civic hybrid too...
Main thing is, I gotta get this 75 mile commute under control or the extra money is not gonna be worth it...
