Another one bites the dust. She's gone: Part II

Just came home with my new car. Traded in my 01 CLS and got a fully load XLE Camry with Nav. Less hp but quieter/nicer drive. Just couldn't stand the tranny issue any more.

I got $13.5K on the trade.

What's cool with Toyota is you get synthetic oil change for life for $500 (4 changes a year).

Woot!

Lots of people leaving Acura with a bad taste in their mouths, myself included with any luck in the near future.

Good choice on the Camry, certainly not what many die hards would have chosen.......but a solid choice and will serve you well.

But I'm curious, why the Camry? Did you consider anything else?

Are lots of people still having tranny issues? I know I don't frequent the car talk as much but I haven't been seeing lots of tranny death threads.

congrats on the new car
I drove a G35S 6MT last fall, and it was very nice. Had I been offered more than the paltry WHOLESALE amount for Piglet, I would have been all over it. If you haven't driven one, do it. Although, I probably would be replacing rear tires every other month.

#4 sucks, but I barely drive it anymore. I started it yesterday for the first time in a couple weeks.

I had 72K miles so they gave me a good deal but I did not dick with their MSRP. I did get the $1,000 cash back for cash purchase (I keep preaching never buying anything unless you can pay it off in one shot)...

Why the Camry? I did a lot of thinking on this (I drive 20-25k miles a year). I wanted a solid car, had 2 Accords/1 CLS (had a bad taste in my mouth from the last one) and was tired of high strung cars since they tend to break more easily. I went with the top of the line Camry XLE with the Nav and it came in just above $29K. My gf's sister just bought the new TL and she was above $33K without Nav. So, I give up hp but the Camry is a damn fine car. Less flashy than an Acura but at least I am no longer sweating the tranny.

I sincerely hope Acura is listening to all of us changing out of Acuras. But there will always be people behind us buying in..

wow....at 29k, i would've gotten a fully loaded Accord v6 sedan. I've been car shopping for my mother and although the Camery is nice, the seating and power felt better in the Accord.

Can't fault your choice at all, Eggplant. I'll NEVER buy another Honda automatic transmission. Four in one car is enough to help me decide. :shakehead

Also, I chose the Camry cause my cut off point is $30K in car. I drive alot for work and I have found that cars in the $30K range gives me an extra comfort to support my back and it is not that expensive. So far, the lifespan of my cars have been 2-3 years and I am hoping for a car that I drive to 200k with not too much problems.

It will be a while before I consider a Honda/Acura.

4 changes a year at 5,000 miles intervals is what I drive in a year.....

to each their own. I hope you are not running a CLS at that is not real environmental either since you should in a hybrid for the best mileage???????????????

Did you consider the Accord? Or did those transmission issues deter you from any Honda/Acura product. Just curious, because most people end up with Accords around HERE when comparing against the Toyota.

I have owned 2 Accords from new (96LX & 98EX) and they were good cars except I had brakes problems (like the Acura). Nothing I hate more than that shimmy. I had new tires put on my Acura about 15K miles ago, had the wheels balanced and aligned but still the shimmy. Was not going to get the brake pads replaced & rotors turned since I pretty much knew I was going to replace the car. So, having owned 2 Accords and the Acura (which is pretty much an Accord V6 on steroids), I decided to go Camry. I know the Camry would not be a choice for most of us here, but my gf's 98 Camry is at 80k and runs like clockwork (better than the Acura to be honest). Like I said, gone is the 260hp but I can live with that.

Considered the Nissan Altima & Maxima but really did not care for their interior.

I am happy with my decision.

And the Camry vin# starts with a 4. According to what I believe

1= US
2= Canada
3= Mexico
4= US

** Thanks to most of you for the understanding/supportive replies. I really did not know how bad I would be slammed for going Camry. Wish I could have ponied up the $$$ for a Lexus GS300.

If you want to response to people's post you should at least READ it first

who is judging ? I made it clear in BOLD that I was NOT meaning at YOU -
yet you still missed it, bravo

I dont care at all how many miles YOU drive or what you drive.

In general 4 changes on syntec is just and bad for enviornmrent - that was my point - nothing about you !

I change the oil in my car every 8-10k.

edit: Mobil1 5-30 synthetic.

Congrats Eggplant, wouldn't have been my personal choice, but I'm sure the car will be good to you.

I've change my oil about every 4000 miles with the Mobil 5000. however I go through about 6-7 oil changes a year. there when I was driving a ton I was changing my oil once a month. but I'm changing it at 4k.

Thanks. Yeah, I know it is a bit of a 'different' choice esp for the guys here. I must admit, I am relieved to hear that some of you are doing synthetic oil. I have heard good and I have also heard bad, but it is assuring.

I have never had a problem with synthetic. That is all the car got from day1. I just add some from time to time.

I get Mobil1 from Costco for $22 for 6 quarts. Too bad my stupid car takes 7.

well, I am no oil expert, but isn't syntec, in general, good for 5000 ~ 10,000 miles ?
What is the avg mileage people, in general, drive in a year ? 16K a fair number ?
so 16K/4 = 4000.

so does this make sense : running on syntec for only 4000 miles ???

i change my mobil 1 every 5k miles

i'm sure the oil change deal is for up to 4 times a year, so if you only drove 15k you would get 3 oil changes

Right, up to 4 times, understand that - but then you'll have dumbass applying the "buffet" logic: "Hey, why not ? it's free !" (human nature) so he gets fresh syntec like every 2000 miles :shakehead

Toyota recommends changing oil every 3,500 for regular oil and 5,000 for synthetics. I believe that is the norm. I have not heard of anyone willing to push synthetics oil changes every 10K miles.

Hey Eggplant do you mind if I ask you where you picked up your Camry? My sister bought one when the new body style came out, sounds like the same combo as you did XLE V6 w/ nav for just over 28k from Titus Will, she got a really good deal, but then when her husband when there looking to buy a new Land Cruiser they would not budge an inch off of the sticker and he ended up buying from Doxon. Just wondering where you sent your business as I am looking at a Toyota to replace the CL.

I went to Doxon. The Salesman was Douane but he was OK. I did the deal on Friday morning and did not pick up till today.

I wish I could have been patient and waited till end of the year. But the XLE with Nav was not the run of the mill car on the lot, so there was less wiggle room.

Their extended warranty was very high $1,875 but had no tax and included the syn oil change. I bargained and got it for $1,100 extended 5/100 & syn oil for $500 total of $1,600.

The one thing I have not decided on is the Lojac since that is another $700.

I don't think I got that good of a deal but c'est la vie. I wanted out on the CL-S.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Always glad to help.
