I don't know if I'd suggest an E30 as a daily driver tbh.

When looking at any Subaru, make sure the service is up to date and theti ing belt was changed at 100 K Miles. If so, they will last a long time. But no performance can be had in a NA Imprezza.

Still waiting for the car to be assessed. State Farm wants to take it to a "total loss facility". Apparently some kind of warehouse where they evaluate suspected totaled cars to make the process go by quicker. They told me this Thursday, car is still at the body shop.

My concern now is I have a bunch of stuff trapped in the trunk. My camera, tools, jack and stands, and some detailing stuff is all in there. I have no idea if anything was damaged. I can't even fold the backseat down.

On the plus side, I have the rental for almost 3 weeks, and my mom will be out of town for a long while so I can DD her car after I return the rental. Means I have some time to save a little cash, and not rush car shopping.



As for my next car, I'm all over the place.

E30: I'm going to look at it, but the idea of having a 23-year-old BMW as my primary car has lost some of its appeal over the weekend. I'm trying to find a clean E36, or E46 if I can swing it. It'd be nice to get away from FWD.

Civic/Integra: I like these cars, but don't want to worry constantly worry about theft. That, and the majority of them are high-mileage bodies with engine swapped, which is a no-no for me.

Impreza: Currently my first model choice. I've gotten used to owning a slow car, so N/A isn't a problem. With stickier tires and a little aftermarket I can have fun with it.

Another MK4: This is kind of appealing, since I have a few small parts lying around, and I've been enjoying being part of the local community. Would likely get a 1.8T this time around.

depending on the budget but e46. Hell even e39 is nice. Parents just got a 2003 with 130 000km for 8g. I love driving it, it's not fast (528) but it's such a nice car

Why? For your price range, it doesn't seem like you are going to get any kind of good VSA, and given your location, isn't going forward more important than oversteer?

Personally, I wish my truck was FWD. I hate hitting the gas and not going anywhere but to the side.

I've only ever owned FWD sedans. I figure a good set of winter tires would make RWD fine during the winter, and I can have more fun in snowy parking lots. And I was hoping to start autocross/going to the track regularly this summer too.

Maybe I'm just asking too much of a cheap car.

Found a couple of high-mileage ones. I'm starting to think that maybe maintenance won't be too bad if I can turn a wrench. Or is it the cost of parts that turns people off?

The extent of parts to be replaced and the lack of proper maintenance by previous owners cause issues.

I would say that as you get 10+ years old, the difference in performance between a late E36 and an IS300 isn't going to be all that great.

But, the Lexus will be cheaper to own.

1. You might be able to get a good deal on an E36/46 but you got to remember that parts and labor won't be cheap. BUT you can get a E46 M3 for under $20k now a days which is hard to resist.

2. Its hard to find an unmolested Integra these days. No thoughts on a Civic since I'd never own one.

3. AWD is a bonus but their interiors look and feel really cheap. But you could probably get a good price on one depending on what year you're looking at. (bonus points for the wagon)

4. Ever thought of a mk4 GLI?

Having now owned a FWD/RWD at the same time...I will say, I like how much easier it is to drive/control/not sht my pants in the TL more. I do have more fun with the S, but it's not a primary car. I think RSX, MT Accord are all good options. My buddy was selling his 2004 M3 and I loved it. I wanted it...but knowing how difficult it is to access things and having zero prior German mechanical experience turned me away from it. Plus, he told me he's put over 10K in just replacing maintenance parts HIMSELF in the last 7 years and he barely drives it. Fk that.

AND, I'm really glad it's just the car that got nailed. I kinda like you.

Whatever I get, I plan on working on myself as much as possible.

As much as I would love to get a 6MT Accord or RSX-S, a clean example of either of those is simply out of my price range. The only 7th gen I could afford would probably be an early 4-cyl (which isn't bad, I love the K24.).

Started looking at some Lexus IS classifieds. Wow these things hold their value. But even ones with higher mileage seem taken care of. I really want one now.

For now, Imprezas and E36/E46s are out. I think the Subaru's interior would drive me crazy after a while, and the BMWs are starting to seem like a crapshoot in terms of reliability.

A lot of my decision will ultimately coming down to what I can find a clean example of. That's what swung me to the Jetta in the first place.

Either way, it'll likely be at least a month before I pull the trigger on something. Might as well try to save as much as I can. Gonna go do some daydreaming about Lexus ISs now

I think the E30 would be reliable enough for a daily driver and they're fairly simple to work on - lots of engine bay space & pre-ODB2 setups are nice .

Just make sure whatever it is, it has IS at the end.

Yes, the V6s do. But the great thing about the IS300 is that they have a I6 (2JZ-GE).

Yeah, I mentioned this before but, while the E30s are cool...they may not be suitable for Canadian winters. Combine that with the salt/etc. on the roads for the snow, the car may start disintegrating over time.

Another option might be an older Subaru Legacy. Better interior and bullet proof mechanicals (as long as services were kept up to date)
