Advice pls: Travel compensation rates for auto travel
Hello, I'm wondering if anyone can provide me with a suggestion of $/km I should charge for km driven during business road trips. The idea is to cover wear & tear in addition to simply paying for gas. And yes I own a TSX. Gas right now averages about $1.10/L. Thx in advance.

According to Edmunds.com, the average cost per mile for a TSX is $0.53. Of course this is in US prices. I don't know how accurate this is for Canada.

When I do relief work, I normally charge C$0.40/km for distances < 100km (round-trip). Then I charge my usual working 'rate' to commute distances > 100km ... (ie I charge by the hour it takes me to commute there and back)
BTW, I drive a 2002 TL-S that gets 8.4L/100km on the highway (approx 28mpg). Gas has been cheap as of late ... premium runs C$1.11/L since yesterday.

That's a lot.
For highway driving it is approx 10 cents per km for gas alone. Is it reasonable to charge double or triple of that? Maybe 25cents per km is reasonable. Please provide feedback with your opinions.

IRS = internal revenue service ... equivalent to Revenue Canada.
I would think that C$0.40/km would be OK to cover cost of fuel + depreciation on your car IF you own it. I never did the math if you leased a car. I plan on driving my car into the ground so the exact break-even point I never bothered calculating. Do you own your own business? You would essentially be 'double-dipping' (ie someone paying for your depreciation + you writing depreciation off your car on taxes) ... but isn't life grand?

Last year (2005) the allowable deduction relating to provincial/federal income taxes was 44 cents/kilometer for non-business registered vehicles for business use. I have a couple friends who are employed by the Alberta government, and they are reimbursed by the province 40 cents/kliometer.
