Acura names??
#5
Acura learned the hard way about car names. Lexus started off with LS400 and ES250 from the start. It took Acura a decade to go to the TL as a name when their marketing surveys discovered people knew Legend better than Acura!

When you think about it, nearly all luxury manufacturers use an alphanumeric naming system (BMW, MB, Audi, Lexus, Infiniti, Acura). Obviously, Acura wanted to make itself seem more like the luxury makers than the lower end companies, which give their cars proper names.

meh, really doesn't matter to me. I think the letters make it seem more upscale... so if that was what they were going for then works for me
Personally I wish they'd actually make a car I would want to buy rather then focusing on naming it something cool...

BTW guys correct me if I'm wrong , but I always thought
TL= Touring Luxury
RL= Refined Luxury
TSX= Touring Sport Cross
EL= Entry Level
CL= Coupe Luxury
MDX= Mid size crossover
RSX= Racing Sport Cross
As for the CSX I'm not really sure...civic sport cross? sport cross?

RL....the R means it's our Flagship....ok?
MDX.....the X means it's our "SUV"....ok?
TL......the T means it's our mid-level sedan....ok?
RDX....the R means.....oh wait...it's not the flagship.....focus on the X...it's an "SUV"
pay no attention to the R.
TSX...the T means...oh wait ....it's not a mid-level sedan....focus on the X....oh wait it's not an SUV either.......it's an entry level sedan......the S means something...not sure.
RSX....nope not the flagship......not an SUV......the S means "super"?

I do miss the old names. The Integra lasted 8 years, which has to be longest run for any one Acura model. It's kinda strange that they didn't drop the Integra name in '98 and switch to the RSX.

its actually the ford fivehundred
there still called integras in japan
Look at how bmw does there naming. i think theyve got it spot on.
1,3,5,6,7,8 defines the size of the car in a sensible order
x signifies an suv
z signifies a roadster
then they use engine size as the second two numbers, and finally, the model lettering. i, standard, l, long wheel base, x, all wheel drive, Ti, hatchback, iT touring(wagon)
doesnt get much more self explanitory then that

H2,H3,whole BMW line,whole the whole Audi line, whole Benz line, newer Lincolns(except the Navigator), the Jaguar line.
to me the numbers with the letters almost sounds like miltary codeing.

yes that was 5 cylinder and the axle shaft went THROUGH the oil pan. I know WTF.if you ever have to replace an axle shaft you'll cuss Honda for their excellent engineering on that one.

Perhaps because the model didn't change at all in '98. It made sense to change it in 2002.

actually that's 1/2 right. in 1996 model year Acura launched in America the RL that 1st gen style ran 8 model years. then in 2005 it got restyled. so if you wanna go ahead and count 2010 as a year on the RL it's been around for 14 years and only 2 generations. they've done "touch ups." but the only Model overhaul for the RL came in 05 model year.

You guys should try living here....
Honda Legend (RL), Inspire (USDM Accord), Accord(TSX), and MDX are really slow sellers. This being a small car market, the Fit sells decently. I digress.
All the car companies here have idiotic names on their vehicles. Here's a quick list from memory(some are OK, some are not):
Toyota (Lexus): Soarer (SC), Harrier (RX), Celsior (LS), Windom (ES), Altezza (IS)
Nissan (Infiniti): Cima / President (Q line), Fuga (M Series), Skyline (G series), Bluebird (I series)
I'll take the simple letter designators, thanks.
