The Supra is more moddable, practical, and cheaper.
The S2K is more fun, reliable, faster (stock vs. stock) and handles much better.

Considering that you have a 97CL already, practicality can be thrown out the window. If you want to mod this car a bunch and cheaply, the Supra is your best bet. You save 12k initially, and lets say you spend 1/2 of it on mods... you'll have a beast on your hands.

If you can afford it, the S2K is going to be a lot more refined of a sports car + if you want a vert, you can't go wrong with it. That, and it'll last you until your teeth fall out. It's also tons more rare than the Supra, so take your pick.

Personally, if I got to keep my 3.2 CL-S w/ Nav, I'd get a Supra with lower mileage and mod it to no end.

Really? I would think the S2k would be more moddable than a NA supra.

whats insurance like on those two cars?

Considering how much less the Supra is worth, the S2k is probably more expensive.

If I had to choose I'd go with the Supra as it is probably more reliable than even the S2k since Toyota and that motor are rock solid. As far as modding goes, I've heard from a Supra owner that modding an NA Supra is not worth it but that could be BS as I've heard of plenty of modded NA ones so do your research. Plus that price difference is nice. Use that $12k and buy a property or smoke bud.

If you're using the CL as a beater, I'd get the S2K, hands down. You don't need something as practical and having a convertible is always nice. Plus, reliability shouldn't be a problem. It's a fun car to drive, easy to maintain, easy on gas (when driven lightly), and should be quick enough to satisfy your need for speed.

S2K, to properly convert that supra engine to F/I (turbo) would cost $15k+ (easy). Need a new shortblock built (bearings/pistons/rings/rods/crank... and machine work) then need to buy all the plumbing for the turbo (pipes, turbo, intercooler, lines...). You couldn't just toss the turbo on the N/A shortblock. Well, maybe you could but it wouldn't last long with the N/A internals removing that "reliability" toyota has.

Good luck with whatever it is you choose

This might be coming out of my ass or I might have read it somewhere, but NA Supras can't be modded for jack shit. All the mods are out for the Turbo supra only, very few parts are out for the NA Supra, and i dont even think there are turbo kits for it (well maybe 1 or 2) but thats about it, and dont expect 700+ hp either, its probably going to get you around 300-400hp at most...

READ THIS!!!

Non-Turbo Supra: Can I convert it to a Turbo?

In a nutshell here are you choices:

1. Sell it and get a TT Supra. It is a much better foundation for modifications.

2. There is only turbo kit that fits your car and it is available on our Non-Turbo (NA( Supra section on the website. $5000 (4-6 weeks delivery). Expect 375HP total.

3. Do a TT engine swap. By the time you do the ECU and wiring harness and professional install you are looking at $12K

This is a very common question and one I hope to answer here, so I don't have to answer 100 emails a day about this same question. Many people start their search for a Supra Twin-Turbo and begin to find out that the search can be a bit difficult and expensive. At some point people begin to see that the non-turbo version of the Supra, while it has the same body style (looks) as it's big brother twin-turbo, it is certainly much less expensive.

The question then always comes, can I add the turbo kits you have listed on your website to my non-turbo Supra, because if I can, then I can save alot of money. Answer: The non-turbo engine is called a 2JZGE and while it has a shared basic design (inline 6) of the twin-turbo (2JZGTE) engine it is a different beast. You CANNOT utilize turbo kits designed for the 2JZGTE Twin Turbo Supra engine on a non-turbo Supra engine (at least without a lot of work, time and money). The cylinder head manifold mounting is different, clearances are different, it has small fuel injectors, is a higher compresssion motor and a few other changes that make it not possible. The non-turbo car has 225HP from the factory and has a very limited path forward for upgrades. We have a separate section on our website for Non-Turbo - NA Supras, which will lead you in the right direction on that car.

Another question we get is: Can is just go to Toyota and have them convert the engine to a TT? Answer: NO, so don't ask. You can perform a costly engine transplant, where you get the computer, entire engine, transmission and mounts from a twin-turbo car ($12,000+) and do an entire engine swap, but by the time you did this it would have been better to start with a twin-turbo car. Twin-turbo cars have larger brakes and other goodies as well.

Well if you plan on modding it then obviously the S2k wins. I'm assuming the only reason why you considered such a huge price difference was because just maybe the NA could be like the 18724234235hp TT one. So then that answers exactly why it's only $12k. If you didn't care for modding, I'd say save your money and buy the Supra. I personally wouldn't consider it for that range as you'll get tried left and right by rice burners that with a little bottle might smoke you. For $12k there are many more options but to answer your question:

Modding - S2k

not-modding - Supra + $$$

that's what I was gonna say
I'd take that NA motor out and find a crate motor or wreck TT Supra and pull the motor from that and drop it in there.
I've seen some TT Supras with stock interals up around 700-800 HP.
can we saying drifting beast

Well when modified they are completely different animals! With Supra prices now; its hard for anyone to afford one without paying cash. The most feasible route is to go N/A then drop in the GTE motor and work from there. But if you are wanting a stock car; DEF. go with the S2k.

I would say Supra since it's $12,000 cheaper, you could use that money and mod the Supra to a crazy beast! Well of course you'll need the 2JZGTE egine like importtuner said.
