30 minutes after a Yamaha YZF- R1 was taken of the lot

BOYNTON BEACH -- A 26-year-old man died in a traffic crash about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 1400 block of North Federal Highway during his first ride on his new motorcycle, police said.

Anthony Thompson was killed when he lost control of the bike and hit a utility pole, police said.

He bought his black Yamaha YZF- R1 motorcycle Tuesday and picked it up about a half hour before the crash, police said.

Dealers should never sell a powerful bike like a R-1 to a person with little or no riding experience. You should have to show proof that you've riden atleast a year before purchasing such a high powered bike that alone would cut down on accidents like this.

I totally agree with you on this, but I would expand it to exotic cars as well.

Unfortunately they will never do this.

Think of all the angry teenagers that get M3's for first cars.

yeah agree on the never selling to inexperienced people part, and the same should apply to high-powered sports cars.

meh....The dealer doesn't need to be a "nanny". It's not their job. Plenty of people die on all types of bikes all the time.

It's the RIDER'S responsibility to ride the bike safely and within the riders limits.
Sportbikes don't kill riders....riders kill themselves by doing stupid things.

My son works at a local motorcycle dealership. 80% of the 1000cc sport bikes sold to 18 year olds and under get dumped or crashed or damaged before they get through the 45 day paper plates. The record so far is 1.9 miles from the dealers lot to totaled.

sad, but a) he chose to buy a liter bike, b) he chose to operate it in the manner he did (it says he lost control) and c) he died.

Not completely 100% true. What if you're at a stop light minding your own business and some car comes running into you? (there's a video out there of that). There's times over n over again where I hear the car never saw the bike and just hit them.

With all these stories, I think I'm gonna spend a day across the street from a bike dealer and just video tape what people do right after they leave the place.

That's why my first bike will be used to the point of being carbureted. And it will be a V-Twin, semi-sport bike...

Reminds me of this one guy at my school who got a real deal Ducati 999 Xerox RR, yes, a real race replica with the decals and everything, as his first bike. Matching jacket and everything. 2 weeks later I see him, same dude with the same jacket, walking to the parking lot to a naked bike. My friend had talked to him and said that he dumped it. Totaled.

Okay well in that situation the bike nor the rider caused the accident. Same type of accident could have killed the person at the light if they were in a Ford Explorer or other SUV.

Bad example, IMO.

My point was steve, is that with a bike you have nothing above you or on the side of you for protection, so while a rider might be driving cautiously, if they get hit, they are more likely to get seriously injured or killed, then someone in a SUV.

Take this for example. If it was a car, you will have some front end damage, airbags will deploy, and they shouldnt be that injured. You're in this situation with a bike and well.....you can see what happens and possible death.

Yeah but I agree with Moog that it shouldn't be up to anyone other than the rider to determine what bike they are able to purchase.

If they want to purchase an expensive and fast bike and end up road kill 45 minutes later then that's their prerogative. There's no need for the government or anyone else to (figuratively) hold my hand while I purchase a piece of property.

Entirely different subject.
This thread is about careless riders, not careless drivers.

True, but again, you said "sportsbikes dont kill riders". Like I said, that is not 100% true. The bike itself contains no safety features to keep someone alive in any situation, involving cars or not. That's all.

i work in a Level I trauma center here in SD. we have these sorts of bike accidents year round. i would love to have a 600cc bike but, i see how they come in and quickly nix that idea. though most of the accidents are caused by car drivers' bad visibility or decisions.

^^ If you want to split hairs, the sportbike did not kill the rider in this case either....it was the moron in the SUV that was not paying attention to the road that killed the rider.

That's too bad about what happened. There are inherent risks when riding, but everyone should take the MSF course at least once regardless. Especially before walking into the dealer's showroom and buying those 1000cc crotch rockets.
