3 years with 20% tint.. changed my rims and bam, a fine.

Well didn't exactly change them. I was getting my two bent A-Spec 18s straightened and all 4 refinished from all the curb rash and while at it I decided to change the color to something a little more aggressive, a mix of my old hypersilver and gunmetal.
The rims came out looking very very nice and compliment the color of my car (carbon bronze pearl) and definitely gave the car a more aggressive look. The very next day driving through my town, mid day, a slicktop charger that I passed by hundreds of times before gets on my tail and almost immediately hits the lights without even running the plates. Obviously I knew what it was about.

I drove with 20% tints all around first on my Maxima which had no appearance mods, for 2 years and now on my TL-S for a year and a half and all fine and all of a sudden this.. Just want to get you opinion, do you think it has something to do with the rims or was he just having bad day??

I will pay the fine. It's useless going to court here, even if I manage to get rid of the fine, the court fee is $40.. It's not worth all the hassle to save $14 bucks.

Oh another interesing side note. The cop was young, about my age, when he gave me the fine I asked if I can ask him an "irrelevant question" He said sure, I said what kind of car do you drive? He say Golf GTI, then I go are your windows tinted?? all he did is looked at me for a second and said "have a good day sir, drive safe"

Cop had nothing else better to do. I'd like to see him get pulled over in his Golf and get a ticket for his tint!

I don't understand the defensive nature of the issue here. Tint on the front windows of a car is illegal in NJ. Period.

This has nothing to do with "bad days" or "nothing better to do" or whether "so many people" have their cars tinted. If the front windows are tinted, you run the risk of being pulled over and fined in NJ.

Not that it mattered in this incident because you had already been ticketed, but asking an officer dumb questions/being a smart ass is a good way to get more tickets. I'm sure he'll keep an eye out for your car now. Also I thought it was pretty obvious that officers speed, run reds, have exhaust, tints, etc because they have a badge; you know where to apply if you'd like to do the same

I was in a similiar situation once, young officer pulls me over and tickets me for tints, he was obviously a hater but what can you do? Rhetorical question, I fought them on account of him not properly administering the test and got them dismissed. While he ticketed me I never got upset because I had the satisfaction of knowing we're about the same age, I'm in a 40k+ car with over a 5th of his salary in mods, he probably stuck in a pos and is feelin' pouty

I took the front tint off my car in NJ when I was 19 and never looked back. It's no fun being asked where the drugs are on a weekly basis

I feel your pain op, in my opinion tint laws are total bs. If the cops are allowed to have them then so should the people....

^ it's a safety matter for the LEO. I have 35% tint on my front sides, which are illegal in CA. If I received a ticket because of it, yes it would suck, but I have to deal with the consequences.

Although I also think tint laws are BS, I also understand why they're in place: they help people hide their identity who might have warrants out, help conceal illegal activity such as cell phone use while driving, etc.

Happens to all of us. I have 15% on every car. Never had a problem. Until a stopped in the median state trooper on a 70MPH HW as I passed him, drove about 2 miles to catch up to me, pulled me over & got out of his car with the tint meter & asked me to roll up my window half way. Wrote me a ticket. I asked him after he was done, why didn't he do a real job like pull over the mustang that passed me like I was standing still.

BTW tint laws have nothing do to with the safety of LE. That's a cop out.

Well at least the ticket is only $54 and no points. I have had a couple in my day. But I also play softball with half the sheriff's dept, so I just get FOP cards off them now. I am very aware when I drive, most of the time if I see a cop sitting somewhere I'll roll the window down just to avoid wasting an FOP card, lol.

Did you not break the law? Was the tint not illegal? Were you not speeding?

So why are there tint laws then? Safety of the LEO and the driver's ability to drive at night come to mind.

Funny, I met a guy who drove a black 1998 Mustang SVT cobra with dark tint on the windows, He said he got pulled over twice and the first question was "Where's the coke?" both times.

Tint is illegal in NJ, so you're rolling the dice when you have it. You got caught. It happens. Pay the fine and move on.

And to make sure this doesn't happen again I'll take those wheels off your hands.

If you knew there was a chance of getting fined, just pay the fine and move on. I used to have tint on my cars back in the day and got tired of having to remove it.

Wait, dark tint or dark skin?

Fuzzy, I am interested to hear the reasoning on why it is a cop out. I agree b/c with my legal tints, you can't see what I look like or what I am doing.

Do you know all of the details of his life? Maybe he owns his own place and doesn't spend money on upgrades on a depreciating asset. Do you own your own place? When I was your age, which was not that long ago... I had just moved into a new construction townhome and was only months away from going to contract on building another home which we would later move into. Does that make me better then you? No. So why do you think that makes you better then the LEO just doing his job? B/C you may or may not have a nicer car then him?

Plus, with OT many officers make well over $100k a year. I know several in the NYC area (and suburbs) who do quite well for themselves. But way to assume...

That's cute, I'm still not gonna ask you out. I currently do not own but am in the process of mortgaging a town house. Way to assume only you know NYPD pay grades; pot meet kettle. Sargents after 5 years in law enforcement make 100k and up, this particular officer only had the rank of PO. Whats the saying, don't assume, you'll only be making an ass out of yourself?

I'll take some pics and post them here sometime this week. It would be hard to see the color on pictures tho because it changes depending on how you look at it and how bright it is outside. When it's really sunny a touch of bronze mixes into it even, and the rim is a lighter color. When it's cloudy, they're a mix of dark gunmetal/gray but I'll do my best with the pic.

Where did I assume? How can I assume if I personally know people in varying ranks, positions, and tenure? Yes, most rookies start around $35k-$40k before OT... and the few I knew when they were rookies also had side gigs (like most firefighters)... and they pulled in good coin...

Every single car that I have ever ever owned have tints and all of them were illegal by a large margin and never had any incidents with the local donut eaters. My RL is 15% all around and cops don't bother me. Maybe it's because I drive like a granny or my car isn't on chrome 20s with neon lights all over with a fart can and stereo blasting through the neighborhood? Or I'm just lucky! If I do get ticketed, I'll just pay the fine and move on. Cops have bad days too just like all of us!

You made the assumption that I didn't know what I was talking about and that that officer had significant rank.

Any 25 year old thinks they know all, and have an inflated sense of self. It's part of being human. But when you are a bit older, you will realize how much you didn't know when you were 25.

You will also realize how distasteful your comment actually is.

Or maybe he was just doing his job. You got caught, end of story. I've got my windows tinted all the way around and I know eventually I'll probably get caught.

I also store my front plate in my garage despite the fact that I've been ticketed twice in 5 years. I choose to gamble but if I get another one I'll get annoyed but pay the fine because I knew exactly what I was doing.

On a sidenote: No one here gives a flying fuck how much money you make and how much money you've dumped into your car. Measuring one's self worth by the amount of money one has is pathetic.
