I was saving $$ for a 240sx but by the time I got enough cash, Nissan stopped making it.

Let's make this easier. Let's pretend you're in, say, your mid-20s. And you're kinda cool, which means you ruled out a used Oldsmobile Toronado.
Acura Integra or Nissan 240SX: Your home Acura dealer, where you bought your car, won't give you a loaner car even when you pay $1000 for 100K maintenance. You're a grad student in the social sciences and live in an oversized off-campus dorm room that's euphemismically called an "apartment." On the plus side, your half-size refrigerator stores an entire pack of generic store-brand cheese slices for those days when you don't want to pay $0.65 for cheese at Jimmy Johns.
Acura TSX: You're a Japanese chick in California. "Hells no" you are not gonna visit your boyfriend in mid-Illinois cornfields. Instead, you dump his ass and blow every guy with a wallet in SoCal and get one of them to buy you said car. You race around, crash it, and lose your cellphone so you can't call the insurance company. But don't worry, your boyfriend will help you out. Not your loser ex-boyfriend, the grad student.
I figure Acura had other customers in mind when they launched the TSX [it's a very nice automobile, nimbler than the TL to drive]. But, reality is more important. And Geishagate was a more interesting story.
If you are gonna go the 240SX route, get a 1997-1998 S14. With a sunroof. no glass roof, no sale. Hi Mom.

For obvious reasons, I am partial to the 240SX. But it really is not comparable to the TSX.

I don't get it.
They have the same engine... in displacement... 2.4 liter...
so... they should be similar...
Of course the tsx is 5 year newer... but... Nissan usally has more low end power. So, I think both cars should be fun to drive.

well... not really... the Pontiac and the S2000 are a hold lot lighter and smaller in size. The 240sx and the tsx are similar in size and weight.

This is an apples to oranges comparision anyways...
But...
TSX = 3345lbs, 205hp... FWD, 4 doors
http://www.edmunds.com/new/2006/acur...206/specs.html
98 S14 = 2800lbs, 155hp... RWD, 2 doors
http://www.edmunds.com/used/1998/nis...276/specs.html
You can do the math and see the power to weight ratio (the tsx while heavier has better ratio), but the S14 is lighter and rwd, so I'm sure it's more "tossable"... The TSX should be faster (auto vs. auto, manual vs. manual)...
Depending on what you plan to do with either car, might sway the reasons behind which one is better... You're in CA, so snow probably isn't an issue, so a rwd car wouldn't be a con... Since they last made the 240 in 1998, you ain't gonna get a warranty on it, so that's a plus for the TSX...
The S14 would probably make a better weekend driver "project" car...

Sidenote: I just came across a 97 240SX at the Nissan Distribution facility near my home (Somerset, NJ). What makes this so unique is that this untagged Kouki has about 5,100 miles on the odo and is in awesome condition. (I will probably make a purchase inquiry for my son.)
