I still wanted something nice inside and somewhat fun to drive. The new 3 surprised me at the autoshow (was not on radar at all) and it kinda hits all the boxes strongly enough to make it the best choice for me right now,......I think. I am REALLY indecisive, especially with cars. Stuff like the GLI or GTI tempt me, or the sportwagon because of the awesome cargo & non-SUV'ness of it, I have to admit. I was back and forth about things to worry/not worry much about, and kind of decided if there is a good option without a turbo, that's a better long term choice vs having more things that can go wrong (even though generally turbo engines are pretty reasonable these days on the reliability front depending on manufacturer). I struggled with considering VW's or not (Almost bought a sportwagen before I got my BMW).

Whatever I buy, I am suffering a not-insignificant power loss vs the 335, so I am not worrying too much about that. GTI/GLI would be better than the 3, of course. I sort of prioritized reliability and livability/features highest, and the 3 is strong on those. Inside, my wife said it's nicer than my BMW (can't really argue with that for the top trim), and feature wise it's on par,..12 speaker sound system, adaptive LEDs and auto high beams, touch handles to unlock car, etc,...sans a kick under the bumper to open the trunk thing. Ergonomics are very good, and it's a comfortable seat/place to be. It kind of gives me everything the BMW does, with the exception of the power (which kinda sucks, but what can you do). If I went sportwagen, the 2019's don't offer LED lights (which I do really want), and for a comparable interior/feature set it's way more money. But that might be the trade off for the sweet sweet cargo space it has. Difficult balance and equation for what to consider and ultimately buy. Already spending more than I'd really like to, so I don't want to go any higher than I already am (wife would NOT be pleased, and we try to be reasonable with purchases and spend within our means). So I am trying NOT to run out and look at anything else, because that would lead to weeks more of indecision & spending more $$$ in the end realistically. And for me mentally/time wise, I need this wrapped up like, asap.

The 2019 does drive differently from the 2018. Handling is still sharp, but it's better/more compliant over rough roads/bumps, and is definitely more quiet inside. I'm sure I'd like the GTI/GLI, and I am sure it is a more sporting drive (power wise anyway, not sure handling wise which I'd prefer). If I have time, I might check one out (GLI/GTI), although I've more or less made up my mind on the 3 and what I am getting trim/colours etc.
You seem like you've really thought this through and are making the right choice for your specific situation. Props to you for that.

Looking forward to seeing the new car!

Thanks SamDoe1 . I've probably put way too much thought/time/effort/second guessing/analyzing/research/etc into this. I think I am making a reasonable choice that I hope I am happy with, and think I will be. I know I could go other routes, like a VW for example, and probably be pretty happy/satisfied with it long term as well. I think it came down to the Mazda being strong in so many areas, and the power being good enough, that kind of got me to where I am. I also looked at cost reduction where I didn't NEED to be spending extra money, such as premium vs regular gasoline. I've been driving cars that required premium fuel for 14 years roughly, so saving money in that area, for example, seemed like a smart choice for me right now (Lots of life changes this past year, including marriage, house/moving, more dogs, more driving, etc). Also, I have access to an E39 M5 if I need my BMW/fast car/manual fix (dad's car, and probably mine sometime down the road), so my day to day car doesn't need to be super exciting. It does make me sad the BMW is going (must be done though), so I am trying to enjoy my last days with it. Plus a new car is exciting too!!!

I should also point out that I am very appreciative of everyone's feedback and advice. I think my choice on colors might disappoint a lot of you haha, but oh well.

Been out of town for work so, didn't get a chance to see the thread until now.

You have clearly thought this very through factoring in many aspects/facets towards this purchase. Just do not get into analysis paralysis.

I can really relate to your thought process in many ways, West. You are just much better at articulating it than I could

A good review by savagegeese with lots and lots of technical details ... although he may have been "captured" by the promotional message in the process .... still, worth watching IMO ....

Love savagegeese, his reviews are top notch. I would not say I am obsessed with ergonomics, but they are very, very important to me. Driving dynamics, I am obsessed with though.

also LMAO @ the dead pedal part

I think if someone offered a better hatch spoiler it would really balance out the back better. Something like the Focus ST has.

Sorry guys, I have been really busy and haven't been able to make it back to update on where things are (and I only really have an update as of this afternoon anyway).

I gave the go ahead this afternoon to secure my choice for the Mazda, and I am waiting to hear back (there are a couple in province, so they're working on securing a car). This was after a long week of internal strife/debate and a bit of discussion with my wife etc. I reconsidered maybe getting a VW sportwagen for the extra cargo capacity (but would have to give up stuff like LED headlights and a bit of power or needing to get the top trim AWD car for 4-5k extra vs the mazda for that stuff), decided the GLI didn't really make sense to consider/look at, and yearned strongly for a Urano Grey or Cornflower Blue GTI (way more $$$ and my wife might consider murder if I went that route). The decision came down to the Mazda being the best option overall as a commuter/daily without going way over (5-7k) what my wife and I would like to spend. As discussed already, that takes into account fuel economy, driving dynamics, power, comfort, features, ergonomics, potential reliability weak points, maintenance costs, and so on. The final thing that pushed me to the Mazda was it's strengths in ergo/comfort and features, which for me I decided were most important for the amount of driving I do now.

Assuming they secure a car for me, it won't be long before I have it. I'm enjoying my last days with the BMW. I'll update as things progress.

You didn't think I'd tell you what I picked yet,...did you?

Oh, and Yumcha I have watched every review out there at this point haha.

White/red cuz he wants to channel his inner-Yumcha.

But, seriously, given how thoroughly assessed this purchase has been, I'm very positive Westie got the car he wants and will be happy with. Just waiting for the ETA now.

Interestingly I have also been intrigued by the new Mazda 3 myself lately (only I really dislike the hatch and would much prefer the sedan version). Personally, I don't really think the 3 has nearly enough hp to justify AWD and its additional cost/weight. That said, I live in south GA so I don't need the extra traction in any circumstances; For me the FWD would just be a better fit. But there are obvious advantages to having AWD and if its something you really want then that's what you should get....
