Jetta because I'm 6'4" and it's plenty roomy. I had a Brand New 2.5 for 72 days as a rental. I really enjoyed it a lot more than I would have imagined. No rattles or problems in 6,000 miles plus.

The civic on the other hand- I hit my knees and can't get comfortable.

Either one would work... Have 'em drive both and see what one they like better... My sister didn't like the Jetta or Mazda 3, but loved the Civic... so she got the Civic...

If it's for a first time driver, civic. Possibly cheaper repairs because you know there will be repairs to be made.

I'd say Civic because it's a Honda. Someone from TSX forum had '06 VW TDI for 2 months had to take it to the dealer 6 times So the dealer decide to buy back the car. Now he/she is looking to get the TSX

jetta sucks.

why would anybody want to buy VW? they are rock bottom in reliable studies. i would be too scared to gamble on them. unless it is GTI, i won't even touch VW.

and tons of my friends who bought VW bitches and moans about their cars all the time.

Exactly!

But you're looking for a TDI? For the fuel economy?

civic coupe all the way. and by the way jetta is outpriced.

if it's not GTI, all VW models are not worth buying!

Thanks for the advice guys, but she is now looking at the Scion tC. However, she wants factory navi and the only one that offers it is the Civic. Kids!

I think the Jetta is a better choice than the Civic.
But pragmatically: I say Civic. It'll be her first car anyway, so she'll either crash it, wreck it, scratch it up, etc.

Ohio-built Hondas > Mexican-built Jettas

I'd go with the Honda-built Accord even if Water-S was putting it together on the assembly line!

Civic...VWs are too unreliable, especially for a new driver. Gas will be cheap, too.

I dunno how I'd feel about giving a teenager with a new license a car with yet another electronic device to distract them.

But if that's what she wants, I'm pretty sure you can get a navi in the Mazda3 as well.

I definitely think the Jetta is a nicer all around car than the Civic but it comes at a higher cost as well. The Civic sedan does N O T H I N G for me and I think EVERY competitor in the Civic's class has a nicer looking sedan.

That said, I would pick the Mazda3 over both. (And yes Deity. The Mazda3 does have a Navi option on the S Grand Touring.)

What do you mean? If you're talking about dropping it or adding a huge muffler/ tail pipe, then no! She's a kid and just wants a nice little car.

I think the Civic is the better choice here. Hondas generally stand up to 'girl abuse' better (ie: not changing the oil, forgetting maintenance etc). No offense to our female enthusaist members who are sadly the rare minority of the girl car-buying population.

I think the civic is probably a better car but the interior on the jetta is a lot nicer. Despite what I hear about their "improved reliability" I still dont trust it. I would love a Civic si w/ navi though.
