2004 1.8T VW Jetta GLI (chipped) vs. 1999 3.2TL-p

Ok, my friends got an 04 Jetta GLI 1.8T. Its manual and a 6 Speed. At stock it has 180hp. Not sure what Hp he has now since he is chipped with Cold Air Intake. Not sure how much he's boosting now because of the chip. I believe the GLI weighs 3,000 pounds. Will he be able to beat me in a race from a stop???? My 99TL-p only has an Injen Cold Air Intake and i now have 18x7.5" rims with Toyo Tires. I run Mobil 1 Full Synthetic and always 93 Octane. So will he for sure Destroy me in a race from a stop or will i still be able to pull on him once up to speed??? I just wana know if i can beat him in a race. I think i can take him from like a 40mph roll or even 60mph roll. VW SUCK, THEIR A PIECE OF SHIT. ALL ELECTRICAL PIECE OF SHIT. Tell me what you all think?

you need to calm down.. a 1.8T GLI isnt that fast, but it'll give us a challenge if stock. since 99tl's are the slowest out of our gen. that intake wont do much for us either. I have a V2 and its not making me feel like im going much faster, only makes it seem like it because the damn intake gets so loud on vtec. but i also do have pulleys, headers, exhaust, port/polished intake manifold, and a bunch of other little things. and thats not doing much for me at all. definitly a noticeable difference, but come on.. our TL's need a diet.

just race him. there's really no point of asking and chickening out if you do know that you'll lose

If this blurb from Autothority is any indicator:

Jetta Project Car

We currently offer our software upgrade for the 2000-2001 1.8T Golf and Jetta and have a few other products on the way. Our software upgrade adds an exhilirating 55 hp and 60 lb. feet torque.
Link

I'll bet on the VW.

I raced my friend's Jetta GLI with a APR chip and downpipe a number of times back when I had my CL-S. The race wasn't even funny, so I think a TL-P would be a close race

04 GLI MT stock is quick but not that quick. with a chip(VW's respond awesome w/chip updates) and intake he is going to beat you if you only have a CAI. If you had headers, pulleys and spacers you might win. I smoked a 06 GLI MT on the highway from a 40mph roll up to 100mph I had 3 CL's on him. I have a 99TL-P w/I/H/P/spacers, grounding kit and denso iridium plugs. 99 tl-p's can get pretty quick, my car is faster than a stock TL-S so just get some more mods and you will beat him, but for now you will lose, but not too badly.

yes thermoblok spacers, do you think I am stupid enough to list wheel spacers as a mod. thermoblok spacers however do yield a gain and prevent HP loss by preventing heat soack into IM & TB. It is a great mod for the price.

My bad, i had a brain fart. But then again people are stupid enough to list what type of oil they use under engine mods....

Well, my friend has an '04 GLI, and i raced him in my '01 Eclipse GT (5spd). I slaughtered him each time. I even gave him a 2 car head start the last time. He didn't have a chance. Now when I had my '98 2.3CL (5spd as well)....that's a different story. Destroyed me every time.

he will spank u big time, makes u look like u r not moving

i raced my frd's Golf GTI manual chipped and he made me looked bad even i have H/E/I on my TL-P, but that was b4 i have the type-S cat and comptech b-pipe

later i found out he has almost 200whp and 250wtq, and 500 pound lighter

i tried stand still and rolling and i lost everytime, however with the stock turbo is not big enough so the high end is slow, u can start catch up after 110mph, but that's kinda too late

(just noticed this is an OLD thread

Damn son, what's with all this VW hate? Sounds like you have some dub envy or something!

I just got rid of my '01 VW GTI 1.8T...Autothority 1.1 bar chip, intake, exhaust, and that car was FAAAAAAAAAAAAST. Sorry, but it would destroy your TL, hands down (and I never had electronic issues the whole life of the car). I remember a few years back, I raced a CL-S on the way back from a ski trip multiple times on the highway, and dusted him each time (which sucks, cause I have a CL-S now and know my "new" car isn't as fast). It's definitely the weight that's killing our cars, no doubt.

V Dubs are super sleepers once that chip is installed, believe me!

Also, the Jetta should out torque you with the chip all throughout the powerband.
