1973 Honda CL175 - Project

A friend of a friend had seen my CB i am finishing and asked that i do up his CB175. So i have my first paid project bike! It is nice sending someone a shopping list of parts that they go by with their own money.

this one isn't going to be as extensive as the CB project. He has a good running bike with some carb issues. he came over on friday wanting the carbs rebuilt, front forks rebuilt and new rear shocks....by saturday day the motor was on the table and he had a wish list. going to be a busy week and this thing will be back on the road in 2 weeks.

sitting in the center on friday night.

dirty dirty

just rebuilding some carbs....nothing to see here

after the bath.

tach is not currently working.

new LED blinkers. working with LEDs and some steel tube to create some.

repair the dent in the tank. also another small dent.

new smaller taillight and cut down rear fender.

holy crap! this could have made for a very fun ride.

dirty tarnished aluminum.

missing airbox covers.

broken point cover at tach cable location.

low beam headlight didn't work, blinkers and dash bulbs.

one dirty engine with some old paint.

as usual when you crack a motor lots of hidden wonders come to light. i knew someone had already been in the motor because they had managed to strip every screw and break 3 of them off. if you are working on anything of age do yourself a favor and get an impact driver or you can just strip every screw head.

next up we have silicone used as gasket sealant. NO.

and the overuse of gasket sealant. this stuff should be used in moderation. i think the guy reused old gaskets and decided to paint them. the excess that you see here has worked its way off and now resides down in the lower unit and covers the oil pump.

brushed out and just need some steel wool the finish them off.

replacing fork seals and found yet more silicone on the bottom bolt. also the drain bolt was only screwed in 3 threads and the rest was previously broken off inside. who ever rebuilt this bike originally did one piss poor job.

i am waiting on a new gasket kit from Canada which will hopefully come in today. Other than that i will be rebuilding the carbs this weekend and finish painting the frame. By the end of next week we will have a running bike.

and we are back together! the exhaust was the biggest pain ever to get back installed. after all this work and i have a cold cylinder 1 upon start up. spark is there, compression is there so that only leave a carb issue. i'm trying one more time tomorrow after work and then dismantling the carbs again and checking my work.

throttle cable was causing idle issues so i mailed it out to motion pro. they make some of the best cables and can also build custom cables for only $45. no one sells a replacement cable for this bike.

the bike is up and running, just lacks some fine tuning. The headlight and seat are due to arrive in the next 2 weeks. gives me some time to polish the wheels up.

x2 for Motion Pro. I have 2" shorter cables on my Hawk due to the front end swap. They fit like perfectly. I think I should start a build thread for it
