$1,000 to spend on accessories...

I can't decide between the remote engine starter and the roof rails with crossbars accessories. Both cost about a $1000 but I can only pick one. This is for a 2012 MDX Tech. I just can't decide. For one, the roof rails really give the MDX a better overall look IMO, but I will probably never use them. Secondly, Wisconsin has some pretty brutal winters (pretty mild this year) so a nice and cozy interior seems nice. I would really appreciate your guys input. Thanks!

Is this an accessory incentive offered by Acura?

In that case, whatever you think you will use the most.

Whenever I purchase a vehicle that has a program for accessories I always decline. Most manufacturers will reduce the price of the vehicle by the dealer cost of the accessories if you don't take them.

Wait, how are roof rails and crossbars $1k?? Even paying list price, the roof rails - assuming youre getting the black rails - are less then $500. I cant see the install costing an additional $500. The silver roof rails are a different story, but you can get them online for about $790.

The remote start sells for about $400 (starter system is $290, the attachment kit is $120) online too. The key will need to be programmed using an HDS, but you can take it to a Honda dealer and have it done cheaper. Acura and Honda technicians train on the same equipment in the same classrooms.

I'd go remote start... especially in Wisconsin.

BTW, welcome to the forum. Be sure to check out our MDX section at https://acurazine.com/forums/1-2g-mdx-2001-2013-166/ . This topic is general enough to stay in Car Talk, but for specific model discussion, check out the model forum!!

How does remote start cost $1K?
How does adding a rook rack that you will never use that costs that much money make any sense?

I would go with the remote start, I don't think that you would regret it where you live!

Daily use of remote start during Wisc. winters VS exterior appeal of roof rails that you will never use...

Pretty obvious one here.. the remote start. Something that you will use vs something you won't ever use.

I asked the dealer about the prices. The remote engine starter (installed) costs $995 and the roof rails about $997. So, yeah.

remote start for sure, I'd love to get one of those in my Legacy but I'd rather buy go fast parts in my case!

Anyways, get that starter!

Big mistake. Take it to an independent car audio store and have them do it. Might be $500 tops then buy the roof rails from our preferred vendors and install them yourself.

$1000 for remote start? Last time I had one installed by a local shop, it cost $250! Worked like a charm over the cold Wisconsin winter.

As was mentioned, those prices seemed very high. So I did a quick look regarding the roof rails/bars...

Roof rails are $270 and Cross Bars are $221 (both in black) on Acura's website. Even through Acura that's $491 based on MSRP.

However, go through AcuraOEMParts.com who is a site sponsor and you'll get minimum 25% off (extra 5% off if you click their banner on our site and put in the code). Even at 25% that puts the roof rail around $202 and the bars around $165... total of $367. Much cheaper...

Not only that...if the OEM remote start is how it is for the TSX then IMO, I'd go for an aftermarket remote start. The OEM remote start starts the car, but when you unlock and enter the car, you have to start the car again to drive it off. So you're basically starting your car twice.

If I had a tech ... I would invest in tires, wheels, magnetic coil susp, ac heat perf seats but then thats an Advance model and thats what I invested in.
I have also added body side moulding and dark tint.
I would not do roof rack unless I have a preety chic in short shirt that puts stuff on top.
With you in snow ice country a remote start makes sense.

You can always do both if you can install the rails yourself and find someone who is reasonable to do the installation on the remote start:
