We bought this for our 2012 MDX, and hoped it would work on the 2016 when we brought her home. No such luck. Anyway, our loss if your gain. The whole set up is $449 new. I bought it at REI. Selling for $300 O/B/O (shipping is on the buyer)

Does this secure onto the actual car itself or the roof rack?

 

It attaches to the car itself. So a bare roof. This creates the crossbars for things to attach to. We had a cargo box.
