timing belt change
 

I have a 2006 TL with 156,000 kms that i bought a few weeks ago.I am going to do the timing belt change.It seems Acura Canada recommends a change at 100,000kms and in the USA they recommend 105,000 miles.Why the difference?

Possible because of the colder climate, or you could be confusing miles/kilometres.

your maintenance minder system should call for it around 160,000km

Only way to know if it has been done was to get proof from the previous owner which you should have done, or ask the dealer to check their records.

^one way of knowing, even tho not 100%, is to take a look at the battery clamp bolts. In order to hold the timing belt adjuster in place while you remove the belt, you need to grind the edge of that clamp so that it can thread down a little hole next to the belt. So, if any of the two battery clamp bolts is grind/filed at the edge, you know the belt has been changed. Or at least there is a good change it was - lol.

My '07 TL-S has 106,000 kms and the dealer sent a letter saying the timing belt should be done at 7 years or 160,000km, quoted me $1,200 but if I booked early would give me a 25% discount lol.

I know there are kits available through US sources for all the necessary parts like this https://www.rockauto.com/catalog/mor...id=404&jpid=16 for $221 USD. Are there any good CDN parts suppliers of similiar kits?

I went with Rockauto paid only 278 canadian for the timing belt kit.

I just got mine done on my '03 RL. The recommendation was 105000 miles, got it done at 106250 and the old belt looked identical to the new one. I should've saved the $510USD in labor to get it done. I'm sure I could have gone to 160000 miles before the belt change. Btw, at my mechanic's shop in the USA, they put a sticker on the engine bay by the rad stating when the belt was changed and at what mileage.

Make sure you get a thermostat, too with your kit. At least my mechanic told me it was necessary. May not be necessary but at least wise to change it while everything's taken apart i think.

If you're serious about doing your timing belt kit get the oe parts which is the gates kit. Replace the coolant and thermostat at the same time since it's being done anyways. I usually recommend doing them at 100,000k or 60,000 miles. I've seen how the tensioners wear on these cars and recommend at 100,000k. Not worth risking 5-6 grand over a 800$ job that covers you for the next 100 thousand kilometres

Just curious if anyone has a good mechanic around Toronto that can do this? Had a fallen out with my mechanic. Also what does it cost to do?

I had a 2008 MDX with 130,000km on it done at IGarage near HWY 7 and McCowan a few weeks ago.
Timing Belt was a kit Aisin TKH002 including pulleys, tensioner and water pump. I also did Drive belt and tensioner, upper side engine mount and two radiator hoses. I supplied all the parts including 2 gallons of Honda coolant and hose clips. I paid $350 Labour including tax. The parts were all OEM made by Aisin/Gates/Mitsuboshi procured in the states. For pricing look at Acurabernardi.com of Boston or RockAuto. I do not know of any US dealer that ships direct to Canada. There are warehouses you can use, one of them is CBI USA in Niagara Falls US. I went to a local Honda dealer that charged me $8 apiece for bolts that cost 75 cents in the US.

I should add a coolant thermostat made by Aisin to the above.
