Well...sh*t...Nikon D3 died
Yeah...this isn't a "car needed an oil change" thread.
I got a legitimate bite to sell my camera locally before boxing it up and shipping to the amazon buyer.
So, I met with the guy...he put in a sandisk extreme CF card, attached his Nikkor 28-70 zoom and started snapping away...camera was working great.
Then he went to test continuous focus mode and we kept getting a r33 error...uh what???
Well...after that the camera just died. I could not turn it on, both lcd displays were dead. Needless to say I was embarrassed and angry.
Called my NPS rep as I was driving back...turns out NPS is located in my backyard so I dropped the camera off and hope to have an estimate tomorrow.
They had said they had never heard of that before...so I hope to hell they find something and offer to cover it out of warranty...otherwise she estimated repairs could cost as much as $471.00
Only upsides...Im getting the rear LCD replaced (had the fogging issue the D3s were prone to...didnt affect anything, but people don't like to see it when they want to buy it)
And the dude is still interested in buying its fixed...but fuck there went the extra profit I was hoping for.

Once in a blue moon I'd get the AF r33 error...but I;d just re-seat the lens and go on my marry way.
The lady at NPS mentioned its rare..but they have seen cards down a camera before. I can't see how or why that would have happened. Especially since everything was working just fine to begin with.

Camera is around 3 years old, never had an issue like that and only has 17k on the shutter.

yeah that is strange. could it be corrosion on his lens' electronic contacts? maybe it caused a short?
either way, im sorry to hear what happened. i guess the good thing is he's still willing to buy it. hope it works out for you man.

All I can find on this subject is someone who bought a D3s over a year ago and had it do the same thing...Nikon said the main board shorted, replaced it...and it shorted a 2nd time while they were testing it....finally fixed it and returned it. But that happened to them within 30 days of buying the body.
I can't imagine its his lens. It was very clean, looked new (it wasn't)
Its just a real shot in the nuts right now.

yep, I bet it was the card
I've also seen errors with lens / body connection, but nothing that killed the camera.

Still waiting to hear from them about it, a phone call didn't get me very far...not really at point worth escalating it.
From the "what caused it" front...will be hard to prove it was the guys card if THAT was the cause...and harder to try and go after him for the additional cost of repair...so I'm just kinda buttfucked on that end.
But lesson to all...if you are selling gear and someone comes to test it....use your stuff, not theirs.

They say the DC power board went. Haven't heard a reason as to what might have caused that.
Not very impressed with how you speak to Nikon reps...basically you're stuck speaking with the low rent phone ops, who are outsourced and have attitudes...and to get through them you have to email people that gets ciphered through them. Highly annoying.
Saving grace as of now...a $500 repair turned into a $350 repair...

Finally got the camera back today.
The price came down from the original quote thankfully. And they did a lot of extra stuff, new grips (even though mine were still newish) adjusting the mirror, etc. I had the LCD cover replaced as it had the famous fogging issue.
This thing is like brand new now, and Nikon covers it for 6 months...so hopefully that will be an added selling point.
And to add to that...you have to PAY to sell on fredmiranda.com.....WTF?!?!?!

I just got an offer from CL...guy had posted a WTB ad.
I relisted my camera for 2800 (hoping the extra little warranty would be worth it) but I am open to his offer of 2500....but he wants to pay through paypal...and for a local sale I would rather cash.

He says he is an eBay seller and thats where his funds are.
He said he can do a "personal transfer" to avoid the fees...should I be wary of this?
To preface this...Ive had good experiences buying like this on the challenger forums...just not sure how I might get fucked as a seller this way.

If they start fidgeting and changing things as far as the funds are concerned, definitely be wary of it. A legit buyer is generally not going to do that, they are going to know where the funds are coming from and more often than not they will already have that part figured out and ready. I'm not saying this is not a legit buyer, just saying be wary, that's a red flag in my book.
Hell, he linked me to his WTB ad. Says on there is he has $2500 to paypal.
And that is what he is presenting me with in his emails as well.

I just don't like the idea that paypal can yank your money back if he files a complaint.

Add the Paypal fees to the cost. Specify that the goods will not be shipped until the funds have been successfully and completely transferred to your bank account.

Hmm.. I read that personal payment has no buyer protection. Seems like he's taking the risk not you.
also, it's against their UA
Have you called Paypal to find out?

A personal transfer is more on him than you. It doesn't come with the paypal guarantee to buyers. It's just a way for him to afford paying the fees.

If he has that money in his account, if you need to, ask him to transfer to his bank and give you cash. Could take a couples days.
