traveling with your photography equipment

I will be bringing all of my photography equipment with me on my trip to Chicago next week. Everything I have fits inside a backpack which I will be carrying on the plane with me. Might be a silly questions, but should I anticipate any problems with security?

Thanks.

First and foremost, are you certain your photo backpack is within the size limitations for carry on bags? If it's not, they could conceivably ask you to check it.

As for specific security concerns, the very most they will likely ask you to do is uncap each lens and look to see that light is actually passing through them. They could ask you to turn the cameras on as well.

i've never had a problem taking my camera on a plane. Although, I don't have that much stuff, and now that I think about it, the majority of it is plastic mount, and plastic body

I usually have it in a camera bag, and they ask if it's a video camera, since they have to inspect video cameras. But i just say, it's digital and they just let it go.

I have the slingshot 300, which should fit fine in the carryon tunnel.
Thanks for the other info, won't be surprised now if it does happens.

Yeah, the slingshot 300 will work. I just picked one up. It's smaller than the computer backpack I've carry onto Southwest.

I flew a couple of years ago with my Lowepro Nature Trekker AW II backpack. It ended up being a tight fit in the overhead compartment but no one gave me any grief about actually taking it on the plane. I'll actually be flying with it again fairly soon. Different airline as well as connecting flights this time so four places for concern on this trip.

Good luck, the last thing any photog would want is to check in their equipment.

I've got a Lowepro Stealth Reporter 400 AW and have had no problems flying with it. I've flown with it in the US, Canada and recently to Japan without ever being asked to open it at security or place it in the sizing device.

I've been taking my gear onboard for a while now and have not had any issues getting it through security. I've never been asked to open the bag or anything like that. I use a Tamrac Expedition 5 backpack, and loaded with my 20D, 10-22, 17-55, 70-200 and 580EX flash, it's fairly good-sized. As long as it fits in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you, you should be fine.

Now, getting a 6 oz tube of toothpaste through security on the other hand...
