And thanks! I'll check that link out as soon as I'm off from work. Unfortunately, they have all shopping/auction sites blocked off.

I'm really diggin' that Sony RX100 but damn it is still so expensive!
a couple features that might be of interest... It's getting more popular for P&S's to have GPS... I, personally don't care for it. I have 2 cameras that have it, and I've only turned them on once (each) to see if they work, and then turned them off. They are battery drainers to my understanding. But for some people that travel a lot, they like knowing later exactly where their photos were taken. Or some people may be taking photos that are work related and the location is required.

The Wi-Fi feature is another one, and THIS (for me) is kinda cool. I don't know if they all work the same, but I DO have a Samsung P&S that I bought about 2 years ago that does have the Wi-Fi feature (I believe they were one of the first to include it in a P&S), and with a Wi-Fi connection (Starbucks, Hotel... Hotspots), you can post directly to Photobucket, Facebook and I believe Twitter. I would think if you're on vacation, getting a temp cell phone plan WITH data would get quite expensive. With the Wi-Fi feature, you'd just ride off a hotspot or whatever and upload immediately. Again, this may or may not be a big thing for you, maybe you don't do FB or don't whore it like some of us But it's still pretty cool, especially if you start running out of space on your SD card (while on vacation), you can just upload them to a Photobucket account and delete them off the card (as a last resort). Or if you lose the camera, or maybe the SD card, but you'll have the photos uploaded. I know with Nikon, I believe they have some kind of "Cloud" service for this purpose... I know Samsung does, so perhaps they all do.

As for the zoom... I, personally, like going wide... for landscapes and such... I would look for the ones that start AT LEAST @28mm or wider. There are a couple in that link that start @25mm, that's just my

Water proof case I got one for the s95 and s90 they work just needed to mod it for the s95 since its about the same.

Thanks everyone for all of your input! That is a great link with some very helpful information is, I appreciate that.

I went to Best Buy today to check out some cameras and the RX100 is such an awesome camera -- I really wish I could find a reasonably priced (gently) used one -- I'd be all over it! I don't necessarily need a waterproof camera I think IQ is a lot more important at this point as it will be a long term investment and I plan on using it when I get back home as well just to snap random pictures of car events/weddings etc.

What do you guys think of an entry level DSLR instead of the RX100? I wouldn't mind making a hobby out of this -- I'm always admiring other peoples photography, so why not?

it really depends on the size you want, if you are considering DSLR vs P&S.

take a look at the new Canon SL1 DSLR, it's supposed to be the smallest out there. that might work out for you. Especially if you want to get more serious about it.

Size isn't really a factor, but it would be pretty convenient to have a smaller DSLR. Would you say the SL1 is superior to the T3i? (I was looking into used T3i's).

For a P+S, take a look at the Olympus XZ1.

F1.8, large sensor, RAW... Lots of goodies for under $300.

Need some input and some help. I am going through a divorce and am not the winner of our Nikon with 3 lenses.... What I am looking for is a good P&S to have around for the kids. Nothing crazy just a good quality that is under $350.

I read through this thread and the RX100 looks awesome but just am not going to spend that kinda cash given the current situation.

I am looking at the following cameras:
  • Nikon Cool Pix P330
  • Panasonic Luminix LX7
  • Olympus ZX-1
  • Fujifilm X10

In the experts opinion, does any one of these stand out above the rest?

I have only used the Olympus but am pretty happy with it.

RAW, macro, manual, F1.8 lens.

Thanks and I meant XZ-1 as opposed to the ZX-10, but I am pretty sure you knew that.

Obviously not a true macro (I needed good low light and macro in a P+S) but this pic of a flower SOOC shows what the Olympus can do for detail close up:

out of those, I personally like the Panasonic LX7 because it is f/1.4 and goes 24mm wide which is quite uncommon for small cameras. (28mm is typical).

I was also speaking to another member that suggested the Sony NEX-F3. Right now you can get it on sale for $399. Still researching, not sure which one just yet.

Thanks for the input and sample pictures!

NEX is great but keep in mind it's not exactly pocketable, depending on lens. So I would say that's the factor to keep in mind, how pocketable do you want it.

I would recommend looking into a Nikon P310. My cousin is professional photographer and bought a Nikon P310 so he can use it for daily picture taking without having to carry all his camera stuff and i was surprised with the quality of the pictures. The greatest part was how great the pictures came out in low light / indoors.

I read reviews of people that went from P310 to P330 and wish they didn't change to the P330 because the P310 performed better but i am not sure how much of that is true.

Anybody have any thoughts on the Fuji X20? I believe that is the predecessor to the X10, correct?

Thanks for all your help guys. Especially is300eater! I ended up not going compact and spending a few extra bucks on a D3200.

All your feedback was much appreciated.

^^ sounds good

I knew about the Lunar model, which is made from a Sony NEX, but I didn't know they also did this Stellar model, which is made from a RX100.

It seems that one of the Hasselblad Stellar websites I mentioned yesterday is already online for some regions. You can access it through this proxi (thanks Tinus).

Alright. I now have serious interest in these compact cameras. There are so many times where I go places and wished I had a camera but would not lug around my DSLR backpack with my T4i in it. Or when my daughter is doing something worth capturing but my DSLR is just too bulky to quickly pull it out and snap.

So I want something that is as close to the T4i as possible. From what I have researched the NEX 5R/5N is more practical for me. I have also seen ISO tests between the 5N and the 7 and the 5N won. Also, since the 5N is much cheaper, I think I want to go that route.

Now my question is, and I haven't found much info on it, is whether to get the 5N or the 5R?

I know you already said that you're now more interested in the RX100 MkII

but just for your information, between the 5N (which I own) and the 5R, the biggest difference is that the 5R has hybrid contrast/phase detection AF. However, I don't think I've read any reviews claiming it to be a huge difference or a big step up. The 5R has the wifi feature, but I've recently picked up a Eye-Fi card that works great (and possibly even better than the wifi feature on the 5R), it was $50. I believe they added a button for easier navigation.

You can't go wrong with the RX100 MkII, but if you do decide to consider the NEX series again, IMHO the 5N is the best bang for the buck (in the NEX series), some stores may still have new ones marked down to be less than the 3N (which is the very cheapest NEX at the moment).

^ Yea I'm leaning towards more on the NEX than the RX100II since it seems to be more versatile in what I would like to shoot.

I think I will look into the 5N as I don't need the extra stuff in the 5R. And yea I won't be using the wifi feature to do a quick upload any ways since I process all of my photos before uploading.

So not trying to post here to show off my car parts, but I was using the video and for the first time notice how extremely good the stabilization is on the Sony RX100 MKII. As I was holding the camera I was actually trying to lean over to the computer monitor to see my dyno results. I thought the camera would be really shaky at that point but I saw the replay and maaaan it is smooth. I know I didn't have steady hands when I recorded this so I was really surprised how steady the video came out.

Btw, the clanging sound at the end is NOT my car, haha.

I am not familiar at all when it comes to video so I have to ask. Do these in-camera stabilization utilize software to stabilize the video or is it a hardware thing (eg lens motor)?

There is both, but most cameras are optically stabilized. When Sony bought Minolta they got one big thing from them...the IS system they were developing. And they have been running with it and improving it over the years.

I would guess the IS on, say, my iPhone is software based but I do not have actual knowledge on that.

It's software based on the iPhone.

Next gen iPhone is rumored to have hardware based IS.
