Hmm.. the D300 is an option, only after February. For financial situations right now, D200 is my best bet. I will consider the D300 though if I do purchase in the April area.

I'm contemplating selling the 17-85 IS and picking up the 17-40 L

Thoughts?

It's a good lens, but since you can use EF-S lenses, take advantage of the 17-55 IS. I shot with a 17-40 for a couple years before moving to the 17-55 and it was a pretty substantial upgrade. If I end up replacing one or both of the 30D's with 5DmkII's I'll probably pick up a 16-35 II instead of getting another 17-40...

with the above. I have the 17-40 /f4 L and want to switch it out for the 17-55 2.8 IS. The combination of larger aperature, IS and slightly longer range make it very attractive if you are on a crop body.

the reason why its that low in price is because the discount is on top of the rebates.

so you have until Jan 12th, unless the code gets pulled before that

I'm trying to learn the "non-automated" functions of the camera to get away from using the pre-programmed functions all the time
18-55 f/3.5-5.6 (kit lens)
Two Bags (I can't remember what they are off the top of my head )
--
50 f/1.8 II (as soon as I can find one locally, or I just bite the bullet and buy one on-line)
-------------------
Now my questions for you guys and gals, I'm trying to decide for well down the road:
Please correct me if I'm wrong in any of the following.

1. I'd like to add either the EF 17-40 f/4.0L or the EF-S 17-85 f/4-5.6
I borrowed a 17-40 from a friend and really liked it, but think the 17-85 will ultimately replace the kit lens and can be used like the 17-40 for landscapes. I really like shooting landscapes.
(Should I keep the kit lens as the walk around lens, get the 17-40 for my landscape shooting and then upgrade from the kit lens if/when I upgrade the camera?)

2. Zoom lens: I'm between the EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 and the EF 70-200 f/4.0L.
This lens will be used for wildlife, sporting events etc...
Both are about the same price, 70-300 offers a bit more range, but 70-200 is a little better quality.

Again, I'm open to criticism on the suggestions (and my wording)

Thanks in advance
Craig

We've got a little studio in the basement that I use for macros and still life, but I needed some portable stands for a couple gigs coming up.

Since we already have a 430ex and a 420ex, the extra 430's aren't that exciting, but the Elenchrom Skyports are sweet! I was going to order 3 Pocket Wizards, but these guys are a fraction of the weight and size. The transmitter is so light you can't even tell it's mounted in the shoe. I was also pleasantly surprised by how small the folded size is of those Wescott 43" umbrellas. The whole kit will fit very easily into a small bag.

I haven't seen many reviews, but some of my friends highly recommended them. I can see why!

It's Elinchrom by the way, I was typing faster than I was thinking last night.

Thanks!

It's just a bunch of lighting stuff... There are two stands, two umbrellas, connecting bits, some gels, filters, gaffer tape, and a couple omni bounces. The Elinchrom Skyports let me remotely trigger the flashes without cables.

It looks like a lot of stuff when it's laid out like that, but really it's just two lighting setups when it's all assembled.

Are those Impact packages some sort of flash stand/mount? I figured it was mostly lighting stuff, based on your description, and I know Rosco (gels) from my from working as a stagehand in a few theaters. So, are you doing a portait session somewhere?

BTW, it doesn't do you much good, but if I ever need a studio, I found this place for rent in my area. Pretty sweet setup for a great price.

I been meaning to get one for sometime. The pisser is, some charge $25-$30 for the damn thing. Was able to get this one for $12 but shipping was another $8.

Also what's sad about how little these should cost. On amazon.com, Adorama sells one for $30. One of the other companies sell the exact same one, using the same name Adorama Hot Shoe Level for half.

^^ Any reason you didn't get one from ebay? Less than $10 shipped and probably the exact same piece of plastic and fluid

Fair enough. ebay can be hit or miss, but for some things it's worth a shot. With many items, the only difference between ebay and the store, other than price and the name silk screened on the item, is whether or not the item stops in a store before you get it in your hands. Would I buy a 5D off of ebay to save $100? Hell no. But $30 vs $10 for something I'm likely to lose, it's worth it to me.
