This was just a test shot of playing with bokeh.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/68088083@N00/3094240056/" title="Mickey in Lights by MoeRonn, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3120/3094240056_65fb403ed9.jpg" width="500" height="335" alt="Mickey in Lights" /></a>

I tried this with both the 50mm f1.8 II and 85mm f1.8, but each lens seems to need it's own sized cut out. The better results came from the 50mm. I just wish I knew someone who really likes scrapbooking so I could borrow some paper punches. It's a pain trying to cut by hand.

I plan on making a few more different cut outs and going back to Disneyland for some more shots. The goal is to get a decent photo of my wife and I with cool bokeh in the background.

^ nice shot

if I understand this process correctly, when you make the cutout to put on your lens, looking through the view finder you do NOT see the shape of the cutout, right?

Basically, when looking through the view finder only, would you be able to tell if you have the mock hood on the lens?

^^ That may be the way it should be, but I definitely noticed some reduction in light gathering on some of my test patterns. If you make the cut out too big, it won't work. I need to play around a little more to get the best size for the specific lens.

Edit - to clarify, NO, you do NOT see the pattern. You just notice lower light.

It looks like a Mech-Bee driven by a crazy two-headed wasp.

I shot this at work but I didn't notice the outline of the robot figure until I got it home and flipped a layer by accident. Also, if you look closely at the bottom of the hole, it looks like there's a person's face in there. That one creeped me out.

Click the image for a 1920x1080 version.

Definately a cool shot Dan! Creative and it has a very industrial look about it.

I made this a while ago, but it's appropriate for this thread.

I used a black skirt & some glitter to get the celestial-looking background. I elevated the pendant just slightly from the background so the glitter would be out of focus, & lit it strongly from the side to get the glinting light.

Actually nothing exploded in the making of this photograph. In fact, nothing was above freezing...

What you're looking at here is a very close up shot of frost on my back door at night being backlit by sodium-vapour street light. The motion of the "sparks" in the shot is really nothing more than me turning the focus ring during the exposure. The effect is all done in the camera, with only cropping done in Photoshop.

The camera was set to "daylight" white balance which exaggerated the orange glow of the street light.

Okay, so not only can you see things that are clearly visable to the naked eye in ways that captures a unique perspective, you can also take something no one would give a second look at and turn it into a masterpiece?!?!?!?!

This pretty much can go unsaid, but.. Nice shot, Dan.

Dan, was that the focus you adjusted or the zoom?

I was using a 100mm macro so I only had the focus ring to turn. Focus ring is really a "magnification" ring, so it works just like a zoom when you're using a macro.

I was playing with the 55-250mm lens yesterday trying to get something warm and holiday-ish around the house since I'm sick and avoiding the 20 degree cold outside. This is the first "real" picture I take with the lens.

I don't know why the background seems so bright after uploading to flickr.
