Yes, practicing is key, and I am getting a bit better. I've only been doing the SLR thing for a few months, so I'm not expecting to be Ansel Adams or anything, haha. But this is a fun hobby to have, although expensive.

And since I've only practiced so far with aperture, and not really shutter speed, I wasn't sure what to use and all my initial pics came out blurry. So then I used the action mode, which then wouldn't let me adjust anything (ISO, aperture, etc), so I was stuck with whatever the camera gave me, and that's why they didn't really come out correctly.
Plus, the birds kept almost coming to the feeder, but they are territorial and one would chase the other away, so I'd quick get ready for a pic, and then it wouldn't happen. Haha. It was tough, but fun.

^^First shot looks like 3rd Street Promonade? Second one looks like TI.
The shoe shot looks pretty cool, actually
Luv - those humming bird shots are nice. I especially like how you caught the wings in the second shot.

I miss my 03 CL-S :(
ok so I wanted to make an entry into the HDR contest but I wasn't able to go out and actually take pictures. I did get to play around with some of the pics I had taken around town and here's an HDR experiment.
(3 exposures, SD700IS in manual, ISO 80)
I really have massive issues with gamma and color settings on my computers. Sadly, I think my macbook's display is the most accurate one.

Here's a selective color shot I just recently printed and it looks 100x better in print than it does online, but here it is nonetheless:

Thanks.
We got back on the weekend and we had an amazing time. It's going to take a while to go through the 30GB of photos we took, but we'll post some shots soon.

I call these....SNEAK ATTACKS! They're photos taken around my abdomen. I take a lot of shots w/o looking when it comes to certain angles, but for these two particular shots, I was trying to take a picture of people oblivious to my camera. Some people are very hesitant when you aim a camera in front of their face and aren't really receptive, so I took these shots by being sneaky. Fortunately, they came out pretty cool. Well, that's what I think...hehe

I wanna be good
Man, some of your shots are really neat, especially considering that you don't normally shoot shots like these (per the thread title). I'd post some of mine, but I don't have a 'norm', so I can't really call anything a deviation thereof.

Oooo, I like the 51-39! The juxtaposition of the grid-like bokeh & the circular bokeh from the lights is really cool.
