Played Plinko with my new L
Yup - my 24-105 f/4L went headfirst over a cliff this weekend somewhere in the wilds of West Virginia. My Kaeseman slim circular polarizer was attached. I was extremely traumatized.
I had just swapped lenses, and apparently didn't twist it all the way. I was setting up the shot & turning the polarizer when it fell from the body. I heard it bounce really hard about 5 times, then softer clicks for another 3 or so. I don't know - I wasn't counting, just flinching. I officially FAIL at photography.
If you don't already have your gear insured...DO IT! (Thankfully I do.)

As long as you didn't jump in after it, it should be ok.

I've been Canonized ;)
Ouch, sorry to hear that, glad you had insurance
I freak if my lens falls from the bed to the carpet, I don't want to think what me reaction would be to have it fall from a cliff

Ouch. Simply ouch.
Glad you (and I as well) have insurance. Mine doesn't cover accidental damage, only theft and loss, so I would have to report that 24-105 as mysteriously lost...

I was canoeing down the Potomac a few months back with my gear in a Pelican case. I needed it to take some shots of an island (for work) that wasn't accessible without using the canoe. We hit some rapids and the canoe flipped over. The Pelican case got trapped underwater under the canoe for about 2 minutes.
When we got up righted I inspected the case and found that one of the nylon straps to my camera bag was sticking out of the case, breaking the waterproof seal.
Camera was wet, lenses were wet, everything was wet.
When I got back to the truck I opened everything up. Removed the battery grip and batteries. Let everything dry out for 8 hours.
To my amazement everything still works.

That sucks about dropping the lens - and missing THE shot.
Does your insurance replace the lens in kind or do they give you fair value in cash? Just wondering if you can come out of this with a 24-70 2.8 (with some cash added on your part)

I accidentally had a nb-2lh stay in my cargo pockets and go into the washing machine... I found it afterwards thinking it must have been totally dead and put it in a corner of my office, but somehow it ended up back in rotation with the rest of my batteries. The fact that they all work and I can't tell which one was the agitated, spin dried, and heat tumbled battery is impressive

Funny that you started this thread.
I went hiking with some folk and someone was borrowing my 20D for a test drive.
I had also loaned him my 28-135 IS. I just happened to be looking at him when he
picked up the camera and after he lifted it a foot or two, the lens fell off and hit
the ground.
I was going, 'BUH?' I had no idea how that could have happened. He swore he
locked the lens when he turned it. He's not sure, but he thinks that when he
picked up the camera, he accidentally pushed the lens release button. Oops.
lens was okay, though. (I think)

You guys are the best! I can't believe you've managed to make me laugh about this - thanks!
Whiskers, I think it was a near thing, but I restrained myself..barely.
I spoke to the insurance co. today - should hear from an adjustor w/in 48 hours. I'm not sure if they cut a check or replace the item. I'd be perfectly happy with either.
Dude, Mo..you have no idea how long I agonized over which lens to purchase. The 24-105, 24-70, or 17-55. I guess this would be a good time to change my mind were I inclined. As it is, I WANT MY LENS BACK!
Oh, and yes, it's a separate rider on my homeowner's. Covers accidental damage, loss, or theft. Hope this doesn't drive my premiums sky high. No deductible, thankfully.
*sigh* indeed.

1. Multi-quote is your friend. Learn it. Love it. Use it.
2. If you did go after it, you probably would have died before you got to see what it looked like.

So I may as well post some pics from the weekend...
The valley (wasn't sad to have to shoot ultra-wide here - in fact I think this was pre-mortem).
