My experience with post-processing has been very pleasing so far. The way Im seeing it now, its similar to what I do with music production. Take a given keyboard or a soft-synth or whatever - you would pretty much NEVER use a sound straight out of it. You always apply effects to it to "dress it up" and make it sound like something personalized, something different, something that matches your preferences and shows what you like. So I might take one bare sound and apply maybe 8 effects to it, to get it to sound how I want. Well, the same thing is happening here, and its totally opened my mind. Post-processing ftw.

Anyway, I have Photoshop on a machine at work only and therefore was using Paint Shop Pro 7 at home. Honestly you can do pretty much the same tweaks in PSP. There are combinations of 4 basic tools I use for each picture, and what I use depends wholly on the picture. For some pictures I may only use 1 or 2 tools.
But before getting to that stage, I run Noise Ninja 2. I do a few test pics to get a feel for how the denoised pics are looking, then I start a batch process setting it to create a noise profile based on each picture (as opposed to using a single profile for every picture) but the same denoise settings for every picture. The batch takes a while to run but I can do other things in the meantime. Such as procrastinate doing something else.. lol.
Now I've got my denoised pictures - ready to PP in PSP. I adjust saturation to a moderate degree to bring out the color, but have to be careful with this because this can produce undesirable results. (This is kind of obvious and applies to any effects you apply on a picture.) I use Curves adjustment and tweak the RGB, red, green, and blue curves in just a notch to bring out the colors. This can also be done with Brightness/Contrast adjustment, which I also use, interchangeably or in combination with the other effects. I also check Auto-levels and Auto-contrast tools, to see if they help. Ultimately I use any combination of these effects to get the results I want. It depends on the picture.
Things to be aware of - applying too much contrast can cause the picture to lose the details of the original - for instance the ripples in fabric. It's really important to compare before/after to see what you are "getting" and what you are "losing". It's kind of a tradeoff because I think you are bound to lose SOMETHING in exchange for what you gain.
I should probably post some "before" shots.
Hope that helps,

Your technique is good, but if I would change anything, it would be to back off on the noise reduction a touch. The skin looks a little plasticky because there is very little texture to it. It doesn't really detract from the image, but it might be something to watch for the next time around.
Don't worry though, skin is a very tricky thing to get right. What you have here is fine for online shots, but if you were going to print something or submit it in a contest, I'd spend a little more time getting the texture back.
I think you did a great job on the other details though.

so it seems that 3 straight weeks of shooting w/ the D70 at the club has made an impression on the powers-that-be... I am happy to report that I will be shooting at the Paul van Dyk show next Saturday @ Congress Theatre.

thats not even the whole crowd... most of it, but not all. It went back from the farthest you see in the back about a good 40-50 feet, some of it covered by balcony.
Times like this I need a wider-angle lens...

Tough taking pics here because there was no real area in front of the DJ.. and security was not letting anybody near him. They let each photographer (there were 3) on stage like 10 feet next to him for 1 minute. LOL. Never seen anything like that. Will have the rest soon.

you can view any picture at full-size by clicking the "pop-out" icon at the top of each pic. Also there is a handy Java slideshow feature - to access it, click the right-arrow icon at the left of the screen to open the menu.

How my outlook on noise has changed in the past few weeks. Yes, I know that is not a sentence. But still, I used to think noise was evil. Now I almost like it. For instance take a look at this picture - the noise gives it a character and feel you don't get with "clear" pictures.

btw - I didn't use Noise ninja on any of the Ferry Corsten pics. shot at ISO 640-800, just left the noise in!
did the same for Infected Mushroom this past Saturday, and was very happy with the results. Hopefully have those up soon.
