Picked up a new sub compact today
I had purchased a Panasonic Lumix FX8 a few months ago. I loved the camera, but unfortunately I broke it in a freak 'step on it while running after the dog' accident. Luckily I had purchased the circuit city warranty, since I only had it for about 5 weeks. Well I sent it in and they sent me back a gift card for the amount of the camera. Now by the time I got the gift card, the model camera I had was no longer being sold at Circuit City. Panasonic changed the body of their sub compact from a metal body to a plastic, hence making it look and feel cheaper. I really wanted to go with a panasonic cause I actually really liked it, but I ended up with a Canon SD600, which has come down quite a bit in price. It was only $225. Of course Canon's are nice, so I am sure I will be happy. I am just a little bummed about switching. The one thing I will admit that I will miss is the video mode. The Panasonic had OUTSTANDING video quality. Best I have ever seen from a digital camera, by far. But I will get by, since that is not the primary purpose. I would have to guess that Canon is the brand of choice for most for sub compacts, would I be correct in assuming this?

Canon makes good cameras overall, but there are other companies that compete well in the compact arena, your Panasonic being a case in point.
Congrats on the new camera. Be sure to post some pics.
