Nikon Shooters: 'EDC' Lens Suggestion

Decided against buying my wife a camera for Christmas, and am going to try to get her into a local shop to try a few on later.

Currently shooting with a D70S with the below 2 lenses.
Looking for suggestions on what my next lens should be.
I don't have a photo, but the current 55-200 I have is the below lens with VR, so I actually have 2 55-200 lenses.

Wanting a general use 'EDC' type lens. Also want something with a bit more zoom than the 55-200 for if we get tickets to the F1 race again this year, but that may be a 2nd purchase down the road.

I'm wanting to get into shooting more, probably not needing anything macro for now.

AF-S Nikkor 55-200 1:4-5.6G ED

AF-S Nikkor 18-70 1:3.5-4.5G ED

The 18-70 is probably one of the best Nikon DX lenses. The 55-200mm is a good lenses as well. Both as everyday lenses are good. But sounds like you want ONE lens.... I’d say that would be the Tamron 16-300mm. It’s a super zoom, so won’t be tack sharp though out. But also can be used as a close up lens, not macro, but it’s lets you get really close to the subject.

Thanks, will look into that one. My current bag makes carrying 2 lenses pretty easy, with one attached to the body. Swapping between them at the race earlier this year got to be a bit tedious & I just stuck with the 55-200, since the majority was shot from the stands.

The 18-70mm is definitely one of Nikon DX lenses. I have also used the 17-55mm which is super sharp but very heavy for carrying around. When I picked up my D500 I chose to go with the kit lens option, 16-80mnm VR, as it was on a big sale and if I didn't like the lens I could sell it. Turns out it seems to be a great all around lens. Almost as good as the 17-55 but with some added range which is really nice. It is F/2.4-4 when I wish it was f/2.4 constant but with the iso performance of newer cameras it is just find. Now 75% of the time that is the lens that is on my camera.

Thanks, I did some shooting with the 18-70 at the Ferrari show over the weekend. Thinking I need to refine my shooting skill with what I got & then expand the lens fleet. A 35mm prime was suggested elsewhere & can be had relatively cheap in comparison to something like a 18-300. So I may look into that as well.

Nikon 35mm prime for DX is another great DX lens, for very little money. The 35mm for FX is a good lens as well. But a little more dollars.

I think Nikon has the DX 35mm prime for $199, currently marked down to $170. Maybe after Christmas/my January birthday I'll pick one up.

I have seen the 35mm marked down as low as $144 on Adorama and BHPhotoVideo before.

Check BH and KEH for used ones. Sign up for KEH emails, they send discounts all of the time. Have saved $1000 of dollars with those discounts, over the years.

Good to know. I have a source for deep discounts on Nikon stuff as well. Haven't used it for the camera, but got a nice price drop on the Monarch for my rifle.
