I just posted this in the Ultra compact thread.

S90 sounds nice and the fact that the G series lost 4.7 MP and went down to 10 is good news.

I don't get why the G11 and S90 don't do HD video?

Sounds like they are doing it for marketing reasons, make people go to the Rebel line if they want better pictures with HD video.

Then what about the SX1?

Also I'm pretty disappointed in the G11, sure it has less MP but the supposed rumor of it having a Larger sized CMOS sensor w/ HD video is what got me interested.

Isn't that what the SX1 is for? I forgot about that one, still don't see it worth more than the G series.

I'm very tempted. I've been wanting to pick up something more manageable for things like our little canoe trip a few weeks ago. I didn't want to take all the big gear, but would be willing to carry something like that around in a water bag or something. Verrryy tempted...

Yeah, a friend of mine has one, and it really is durable. I want something with minimal shutter lag, highest possible p&s IQ, and DSLR-like controls, though. Something that wouldn't make me want to slit my wrists if I damaged it, and doesn't require an extra pack-mule or indentured servant to carry when I need freedom to play.

the f2.0 (on the wide end) sounds really cool. I may have to look more into the SX20 for the wife. I know the IQ won't be perfect, but 28-560mm equivalent sound awesome.

I can't tell you how many requests come in from customers asking for a replacement to the Sxx line. It will be a huge seller.

I just recommended the waterproof/shockproof Canon to my boss last month. He ended up getting it for his trip to Hawaii. He kayaks a lot and likes to bring along his camera, but his old one was real shitty.

I think the lack of video on those 2 cams is gonna be a dealbreaker for a lot of people (such as myself). These days, we want our cake and we want to eat it too. We want a good performing small camera that also does 720p video. We do not want to carry around multiple devices.

Nice on the cutback of the MP's..

All the cameras have video, they just have the normal 640x480 rather than
720p. I don't see this being a dealbreaker for your typical person.

I don't see the point of the SD 940 IS. The SD980 is barely more expensive ($30 MSRP) and both wider and has more zoom.

Still doesn't make sense not to add it when its do easily done. Not a deal breaker for me but I can see it being one for a lot of people.

yeah, it's a question of getting with the times. 720p is becoming rather customary these days.

The S80 was the last of the line, there hasn't been an 'S' camera since. I think that was back in 04 or 05.

hm... for the S90.

On the right, we show the use of the Zoom option - by rotating the Lens Control Ring, users can toggle between 28, 35, 50, 85 and 105mm equivalent focal lengths.

G11, S90, SD980, SD940

What are the major differences among them? I'm looking to purchase a p&s for my gf.. but can't pick. My budget is maximum $500. The camera must have that RAW format option..

Thanks guys!

afaik G11 and S90 have manual controls. And iirc RAW where the other 2 are more mainstream P&S cameras.
