Certainly there are many factors that will determine the final outcome of a shot, but if your camera can bracket 3 or more frames, use it. Even if you decide to use only one of the frames, that's fine, but at least you have the option to blend more for reduced noise.

Here's an example that compares a single shot put through an HDR technique vs multiple exposures put through the same process:

If your camera doesn't support bracketing, definitely shoot in RAW or 16-bit TIFF (if that's even an option). You'll need as much headroom as you can get from your original file. JPG only contains 8 bits of image data, RAW contains at least 10 to 12 bits.

To me their are a few benefits to shooting in RAW. First and foremost, my camera doesn't do bracketing, so I would have to manually change the exposure and shoot multiple shots. This would definitely cause my to move and create blurred images when combined in processing. Secondly, and this is almost an extension of what I just said, shooting in AEB can also create a blur. If you are taking a picture of a building for example, and there is a flag on a mast at the top. When you shoot in AEB, you will see a blur if their is any wind after you combine in processing. Shooting in RAW utilizes only one original image so it will not have this blur. Third, it's just quicker. I take ALL my pictures in RAW. It takes a few more minutes to convert all my pictures when I want to view them, but in the end I have a digital negative of every picture I take.

So really you can take them either way, and either way should produce great results. Its more int he processing then which format you use to take the picture. After a while you will find the real gift is in eyeing a scene that you know will make a nice HDR image. Good luck.
Dead on.. thanks Audi. I've been reading and HDR photography has been around for years, before auto bracketing so I don't see the point in arguing if you return stunning results.

I think I'll try that out.

Thanks for the breakdown guys. I'm touring the soon to be in-laws around town so I'll post up some interesting shots and share my own findings. My gf has been following Trey Ratcliff's blog.. that guy is pretty nuts as well. He's a local photog who had the first HDR photo hang in the smithsonian. He's actually having a limited seating HDR workshop coming up in Janurary.. price.. idk.. expensive I'm sure. Anyways he has a wicked tutorial & website.. I'm not sure if it was mentioned already, but check it out:

http://www.stuckincustoms.com/

http://www.stuckincustoms.com/hdr-tutorial/

I do have one additional question about software. Nobody argues the benefit of Photomatix.. but is there a benefit of noiseware over noise ninja? Trey mentioned noiseware has a plugin for photoshop but doesn't mention a benefit other than that over noise ninja. Thanks for the help guys!

photography is addicting... you start off with the body and maybe the kit lens... and after that, you're hooked. You just wanna keep buying lens (and other stuff, flash units etc etc...) for different occasions.

Very true. But in all honesty if you want to get into some fun photography, you can pickup a cheap yet decent quality point and shoot that has AEB mode and create some nice HDR's. I keep meaning to use my girlfriends Panasonic that has AEB just to see how some pics come out. If I do I will post them here.

Off the top of my head Lucis 3D Pro DE and SE. Some sharpening, contrast and saturation adjustments after that.

I never note my steps, maybe it's time I should.

Hard to say, we stumbled upon the location after a video shoot. One of the guys in the SoCal forum has the location pinged on his GPS but he won't give it out. He doesn't want anyone stealing the photoshoot spot.

The area is readily accessible, not restricted at all. I felt safe, since there was 5 of us that night.

I bought a D40 late July, telling myself that I would not need anything more. Also, bought a Best Buy special tripod at the time.

Now I have a D90, Manfrotto tripod, Ballhead, Tokina UWA. Looking to get some prime lenses too.

I would be interested in seeing the pics from the Panny.

You guys are amazing. I LOVE HDR shots...I already have flashes of myself as an old man with photography as one of my hobbies and HDR shots from all around the world. I HAVE to get into this.

What is the best camera for this please? I am a HUGE fan of canon...but I see a lot of people are using nikon. What is the cheapest camera to start on HDR that allows this AEB mode? What does that stand for please...as I'm not sure...maybe my point and shoot Canon SD870IS has the ability so I can get started fooling around with it.

Thank you in advance...

there is no best camera for HDR...since turning it into a pseudo-HDR image (computer screens can't handle 32-bit images, so they create imitated HDR images) is done on the computer, you just need something that takes the pictures...

AEB stands for Auto Exposure Bracketing....basically taking an underexposed shot, normal exposed and overexposed shot for you....then combining them and adjusting their contrast and all that jazz is where the HDR comes in.

for Nikon, the D5000 (approx. $700) does exposure bracketing...not sure if it's auto or not....my D80 (now proceeded by the much better D90) does AEB.

you can't go wrong with nikon or canon...find something within your budget that does what you want and feels good in your hands...which means going to the store and actually holding them.

two programs to aid in helping you create HDR images are Photomatix and Dynamic-HDR...photoshop can come in handy too after processing your pseudo-HDR image in one of those two programs...

All my shots were taken by my now sold D40. I did my 3 exposures in PS, then merging in Photomatix. I'm still doing it this way even though I have a D90 now.

The software you're using is crap.. use photomatix & nn or at least CS.. the noise in those pictures is terrible & there's no contrast definition that I see.

Also if you shoot multiple exposures use a tripod & shoot in RAW so your options stay open.
