Im looking to buy a digicam, Between 300-600 dollars
I want 7-10x zoom and be able to change shutter speeds
what should I get.
what should I look for?, megapix., shutter speed?


are conventional cameras better, it just seems more expensive and time consuming to go develope film?

any good websites about cameras out there?

umm... ya theres some solutions in your price range.

Canon G5, G3, S50 Take your pick, for your price range those are the best ones you can get.

those don't have the 7-10x zoom, unless you count digital zoom, which you shouldn't

I bought a Canon S50 a few months back...lots of features...excellent picture quality...only drawback is you need a spare battery as the battery will not last a full day...other than that...a great camera...

No you're you shouldnt count digital zoom, ever. But either 3 of those cameras are worth sacrificing a longer zoom.

The only thing good about conventional cameras is that film cameras generally focus much faster than digital cameras.

In the digicam world you have to get used to waiting a second or two for focus lock.

Besides that, until you get into more expensive film cameras, there's not that much difference anymore. Digicams are infinitely funner.

If I were you, I would not worry about megapixels. Megapixels are overrated.

Biggest things:
1) size/weight
2) optical Zoom

Go to a best buy or something, decide how big of a camera you want.

A very reasonable starter camera is the canon S50 or
Olympus 750. The Canon G5 is nice but several of my friends
dislike it because it is big and not light. S50 is almost the same except G5 allows external flash, and G5 has the twisting LCD.

To be quiet honest with you, any digicam over say, $300 should be just fine. You really have to be a bit of a photo head to start
noticing differences in day to day use.

I highly recommend Canon. Ive been dealing with digtal cameras for a long time and they are the best p&s cameras you can buy. The only reason I bought a nikon digi slr is cause i prefer i nikkor optics. But i still have and love my digi elph.

Just cant beat the canon, specially when compared against panasonic. Answer your own question...Is panasonic known for making cameras???

Yeah, I have to agree with that.
Stick with brands that already make film cameras, because they know how cameras should be designed.

The Kodak cameras are another good example. Kodak knows film and picture quality, but I haven't liked any of their digital cameras, really. (well, not including their ultra high enders)

i just picked up one of these from newegg.com. fuji finepix s5000. bullaculla recommended it.

I like the look of that camera but the min shutter speed is only 2 sec, that is kind of low right? say if you wanted to take a pic of a waterfall and capture the white water.

but I do like a black camera.

If youre shooting a waterfall, you want to use a faster shutter speed like 1/500sec. Youll only use a 2 sec shutter speed when you are doing long exposure photography on a tripod.

ha ha, yeah, go TRY the camera there, but don't buy it there. :)

2 seconds is a hell of a lot of time. If you want those artificial silky looking waterfalls, 2 seconds should still be fine.
Note any exposure over say, 1 second will look like crap unless you use a tripod, and most people aren't that hardcore.

What kind of zoom do you want?
Rejecting a camera due to its color is a little silly - nobody is going to look at the pictures later and care what color the camera was.

If you want more than 3x zoom, you're probably going to have to bump up your budget to more than $600. 3x is some sort of unofficial standard.

the camera i posted above has 10X optical and 2X digital zoom. it can be had at best buy for $400. less than that on the web.

6.0 megapixel recordable, 3.2 megapixel usable. and it takes 20 fps movies w/ sound.
