Good point...

I would however, like a splash proof camera, for canoeing trips or so.
I'm not so sure that's the same thing.
Exactly. I can't tell you how many "I was in a boat and my camera got water on it" stories I've heard over the years. Granted, most of those were P&S user's.

Got any specs on the D200 replacement

I wonder if this means the d200 will drop enough in price to finally upgrade my d100.

^^^ That information might be out on Thursday. I think it was www.engadget.com that had something on that, it was a Japanese ad.

If that is your main gripe about the camera, then you are just looking for reasons to complain. Sure, it would be nice if the meter was a little better, but I have never had a freshly charged battery drain on me in a single day of shooting - and that is with shooting 400+ shots with some internal flash use (on a 30D). Just keep an extra battery around just in case. IMHO that is no where near enough reason to upgrade.

Should I skip the 28-135mm lens the 40D will be bundled with?

I was planning on picking up a 17-85 IS for my walk-around lens.

There's also a new 18-55 IS kit lens, but I don't think it will be available immediately when the 40D comes out in September. The MTF charts show that it's a major improvement over the old 18-55.

If you don't want to wait for the new 18-55IS, check out the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. It's a great lens that won't break the bank.

The 28-135 is a pretty solid lens.
The only real gripe for me is that it lacked on the wide angle side - 28*1.6 = 44 mm.
I got the 20mm sigma shortly after (which I loved). But over time, I've gone wider and wider, and now the 10-22mm is my favorite lens.

The 10-22mm will definitely be my 2nd lens since I don't anticipate the need for more "reach" until next spring when race season gets underway again.

The current 18-55 IS is quite expensive compared to the 17-85 IS. Are you implying that the new "kit" lens will be closer in price to the 17-85IS?

No, there is no 18-55 IS.
You are mistaking it with the uber expensive 17-55 F2.8 IS.
The new 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS replaces the dirt cheap 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Kit lens.

Time till tell to see how the 18-55 F3.5-5.6 compares with the 17-85 F4.5-5.6 IS.

I heard rumblings that Canon was going to make a simpler IS for the cheaper lenses. This is a good idea - something cheaper but doesn't have fancypants stuff like panning support, or tripod compensation.

So with the release of the 40D what do we anticipate will happen to the price of the remaining 30D's

Can't drop more than 10% right?

correct. Here's a diagram of the new "4 stop" IS vs. the old "3 stop" IS.

i wasnt listing that as a reason to upgrade, i was just stating that in general that i dont like how canon cameras they use that bar type meter for their battery guages.

and ive shot before where i had my grip full of 2 freshly charged batteries and i churned thru them within 2-3 hours of shooting, but that was pretty much 95% flash. and it went from telling me that i was at half charge to empty and the camera not powering on.

luckily when i bought the grip off someone he included 2 extra non canon branded batteries.

it should be less of a problem now cause im ordering a 430ex tomorrow.

Well, if you can dig through all the flamers, and crud, some people actually received their 40D.

Just for the hell of it, I preordered one - Be nice to get it before my trip in september but I'm not counting on it. I'm guessing early october. Although it will be annoying waiting for a RAW update in lightroom so I can convert the RAWs.

You mean sRaw, it took me a little to put together you last sentence. If you preordered from amazon.com, you just went up one spot in line. I cancelled my preorder.

I want FF, so now I'm debating 5D now or wait until Spring '08 and see what happens. I think I can wait until spring, but then I think what happens if it doesn't come. Then I think that it would have to come Fall '08. But there has to be a 5D replacement Spring '08, It's 2 years old this month.

Just got a check in the mail for the balance WC owed me. It almost covers it. Glad you said that though, I forgot it's my turn in the phone tag game I've been playing with a lady who wants my pottery wheel....

The high ISO shots from the 40D posted on DPR look really good. I can't wait to read full reviews for this camera.

B&H doesn't do preorders anymore. Too many people preordering from 100 places and then cancelling all of them after they get one.

Apparently the camera is released in Hong Kong first (30D did the same thing actually). The Canon Hong kong website is the only site that has the 40D manual on it - Chinese only though!

Oh, I called Ace today to ask about their pricing/wait list/estimated arrival, etc. He said they'll prob be selling under $1300 for body only?? I'm on the wait list. If I get a call before Amazon ships my order, I'll go pick it up.

Oh yeah,
