Wow I'm surprised at how simple the lighting setup is in the OP.

I'm trying to imagine why that softbox would cost $150K and having a hard time. Several tens of kilobucks I could understand, but not $150K.

Its called a syke stage.

You typical have to wear those blue shoe booties to keep it clean, and it gets repainted every so often.

If that box im looking at is what I think it is its called a fisher box. Several individual sources..the wattage escapes me...with easy access to add gels to change the color temp.

The light wouldnt cost 150k I dont think...but the light along with the motorized grid it riding on probably does.

You could probably build something almost as good as that by yourself. Make the frame, get whatever material they use on silks, and a bunch of Kinoflo's. The kino's would cost the most though but I remember someone at school who bought a decently large sized set for around 3k.

You wouldnt want kinos.

You want something with the ability to throw more light, you want to be able to dim the light.

I believe kinos say they are dimable with no color shift. But work with any major gaffer and you will never see a kino on a dimmer. They do go magenta if you dim them down.

I believe a fisher box uses 1k or 2k lights.

The lighting of a car can be VERY simple...its just the size of the gear you really need to accomplish it. That silk hanging above the car aint tiny.

You get on car commercials that arent on a stage with a fisher box...and you typically have a crane hanging a 20'x20' custom made soft box...

It's also simple because they're not trying to do anything particularly artistic in these photos. It's more of a "catalog style" photo shoot. They're just trying to make sure the car is evenly lit.

The lighting gear would be much more extreme for advertising or editorial shots.

True, but in my experience on car commercials...most shooters go for simple. Its easier and faster. The clients usually always walk away happy...and so much is set up for post production enhancement today anyway.

I was on a show where they started to get artistic and try some things. It was abandoned after a day because it got too complex and was taking too long.

I guess this should technically go in the "pics you have NOT taken" thread, but while we're on the subject of artistic car photography....

http://www.boydphoto.com/#mi=2&pt=1&...0&p=1&a=0&at=0

If the link doesn't work: Collections -> Shelby American Collection

Not sure if I ever spell is right..but the stage or the wall is called a syke/cyke.

Basically its a walls or back drop that seamlessly curves/transitions to the ground. making it all like one giant piece.

You can see it better in the very first 5 pics with the white syke.

Gotcha. I've always heard of them being called infinity walls or coves, but I'm sure there are other terms for them.
