Any Photoshop veterans here???

I've been having the hardest time figuring out what is going on with PS. I've only had it for a week or two, but I can't seem to upload my .NEF RAW files.

I somehow was able to get 1.

A single picture uploaded two or three mornings ago in Camera Raw, and then it went back to not uploading them.

I've downloaded the latest version of Camera Raw from Adobe's website, but no luck. This is the message that pops up when I try to upload any of my .NEF files through Camera Raw.

"Could not complete your request because the file-format cannot parse the file"

Any suggestions on what I should do/try??

And you're sure you have the latest update for your camera?

What does updating the camera have to do with the .NEF files?

I'm not connecting my D300 directly to the computer, I'm just taking the CF card out and using a reader.

I don't know anything about Nikon's digital formats, but I would try the software that came with the camera. Is it possible there is something wrong with your CF card, or are you copying the files to the computer fine, but can't open them in PS?

Yea.
They copy from to my computer and external HD just fine.
I would use the software, but it was only a trial, and I'm not paying $180 for it after I already bought PS.

This sucks.

Did you get a free capture NX product key in the D300 box?
Have you tried to use View NX to view the NEFs?

I got a 30 day trial code.

EDIT: I could view all my photos just fine during the trial, so I know the files are ok.

Get Adobe Camera Raw (free off the net)

IIRC that is the name of the program that solves problems viewing RAW files.

Just to confirm, you're only trying to open the files in PS/ACR after you've already copied them to a hard drive, right?

Just to clear something up. Are you just trying to view the RAW files? Or are you opening PS to see them?

I had to update LR before it would recognize my 40D files. Reasonable to think it might need to be done for Nikon's too. K?

maybe try removing and re-installing Camera RAW 4.5 (the latest version)...

also...

http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html

*The file encryption found in some Nikon raw formats has caused some users to question the level of cooperation between Nikon and Adobe in providing solutions for raw processing. Get more information about Nikon's and Adobe's joint commitment to our common customer needs.
...but i would think the D300 would work fine with Adobe's Camera RAW...

I removed and installed the CR update again, and the same message came up when I try to run the plug-in

"Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file"

W. T. F.

Is my PS just a piece?

It's not like I could take it back to the school either and say "PS SUCKS!" since I've already 'opened' it.

Should I keep on trying to figure out what's wrong?
Contact Adobe?
Ask for a refund?

I'm really getting frustrated.

Can you open the files with Adobe's DNG converter? Since it uses Camera RAW to do the conversion, it would be interesting if it worked.

Ok, this might have worked.

Let me know if I'm doing this right.
After downloading the DNG converter, I opened it up, selected a file, and it converted the files (still saving the originals) to .dng files. When I click that, it opens the file in Photoshop through Camera Raw.

Is that what is supposed to happen?

Does the conversion preserve the RAW file contents?

If so, your freakin awesome Dan.
And everyone else too that provided advice.

Yes, it's a lossless conversion of your RAW files, so feel free to use it. However, I'm a little puzzled because it uses Adobe Camera RAW to do the conversion, so it doesn't make sense that Photoshop can't open the files but the DNG converter can.

You wouldn't be using an older version of Photoshop like CS2 by any chance would you? If so, that might be the problem right there. Adobe is a bitch when it comes to Camera RAW for older versions of Photoshop. They only update Camera RAW to support the latest version of Photoshop. The highest version of Camera RAW that works with CS2 is 3.7 and that will only support up to the Nikon D200. Version 4.5 supports the D300 but it will only work on CS3.

Nope. It's CS3.
Like you said, I'm not sure either why it's not working that way, but regardless, thanks for the tip.

There's no description to how frustrated I've been the past couple of weeks. Thanks again!

Ok, then something is definitely not right.
Are you sure you copied the "Camera Raw.8bi" file to the right directory? It has to go in "Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats". It's a common mistake to put it in "Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Plug-Ins", which won't work.

Are those directions for a windows OS??

I have a MBP. I looked for about 10-15 for that file area and I couldn't.

Sorry, yes that's a windows os folder. You want "Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS3/File Formats" on your mac.

awesome...glad the mystery has been solved...nice job dan...

just curious, why are you having to manually copy the camera raw.8bi file into your folder? ...i've never had to do that -- adobe automatically installs it in the correct location when i install photoshop...

CS3 shipped with Camera RAW 4.0, which only supported up to the Nikon D200. To get support for the D300, he had to upgrade to v4.5. You can either install it automatically via Help -> Updates, or you can manually download it and extract the file directly into the appropriate folder.

oooooh...adobe set itself to automatically update it's programs for me after installation, so i've always just let it do its own thing...now i can see where the fork in the road is...
