So when you guys convert to DNG, do you just delete your proprietary format files?

That's what I'm doing. For me its really coming down to a space issue, Ive been shooting so much over the past weeks (months) that I'm scrambling for storage. No sense in me keeping both RAW and DNG formats saved.

However, if it was an event that I held dear to my heart I think I would just import the original files. You're always going to be able to convert them later on, if you want.

Effectively yeah, I delete them. I haven't formatted my cards in a long time...goes to show how much i haven't been shooting lately...how big the cards I bought are

I import them to LR converting to DNG...with a simultaneous back up to another drive via LR.

them i make a 3rd back up.

Exclamation

heads up to everyone who shoots RAW+JPG. Apparently there is a bug in LR4 that is preventing the importing of the RAW files and only imports the JPGs. It isn't 100% of the time, but it looks like I've been bitten by it.

Took a trip to New Orleans and shot a few hundred shots, imported files, looked through the images and later formatted the card. I've come to find out the RAW files were import for the first 9 images and then only JPGs after. My fault for not backing up the images directly off the card (or paying more attention to the import), but it's still a pretty big bug.

I'm trying to recover the SD card now, but I don't expect much...

Looks like it's been fixed in the latest RC, which I'll check out soon.
http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/lightroom4-1/

Unable to import RAW+ JPEG files directly from Canon 5D, Canon 5D Mark II, Nikon D700, Nikon D90, and Sony NEX5 cameras when connected through USB.

Unable to import RAW + JPEG files when using the built-in SD card reader on Macbook laptops in some scenarios.

Funny, I always import through my camera via USB.
Mostly because it's faster than any reader I've ever tried.

I shoot RAW only though, so no issues with LR4.

my card reader busted a couple years ago...so I import through my D3.

I do use the built in SD reader on my MBP for my other cameras.

But as others said, I only shoot RAW but thanks for the heads up.

Lightroom 4.1 released today.

http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjour...available.html

Lightroom 4.1 is now available as a final release on Adobe.com and through the update mechanism in Lightroom 4. The goal of this release is to provide additional camera raw support, lens profile support and address bugs that were introduced in previous releases of Lightroom. In addition, Lightroom 4.1 introduces the following new features:
  • The ability to process HDR TIFF files. (16, 24 or 32-bit TIFF files) This can be useful if you have merged multiple exposures into a single 32-bit image using Photoshop’s HDR Pro. Using the new basic panel controls can be a very effective and straightforward method of achieving an overall balance across the tonal range.
  • Additional Color Fringing corrections to help address chromatic aberration. Click here to learn more
  • Save photobooks created in the Book Module as JPEG files
  • Publishing photos to Adobe Revel is now accessible via a Publish plugin
Bugs Corrected in Lightroom 4.1

The following bugs that were part the Lightroom 4 releases have been corrected. The team appreciates the very detailed feedback the community has provided on Lightroom 4 and we’re excited to correct a number of issues experienced by our customers. These issues have been FIXED:
  • Point Curve adjustments made in Lightroom 3 have been restored.
  • Edit-in functionality has been restored to external applications including Adobe Photoshop and Nik plugins
  • Addressed performance issues in Lightroom 4, particularly when loading GPS track logs, using a secondary monitor, and the controls within the Develop module.
  • Ability to update DNG previews and metadata for more than 100 photos has been restored.
  • This update allows for improved viewing of subfolders and stacks in folders with a large number of photos.
  • It was possible that a layout of a saved book could be lost after quitting Lightroom 4.
  • Adjustments made in the Develop module were not properly being reflected to photos that have been laid out in the Book Module
  • Postscript Type 1 Fonts do not appear in the Font menu within the Book module.
  • Clarity adds grey tinting to 100% white tones.
Known Issues in Lightroom 4.1:

  • Double byte fonts such as those found in Chinese and Japanese characters are not being exported to PDF or when published to Blurb.
  • The Revel Publish Service will delete photos from a carousel. This occurs when the customer asks Lightroom to delete the carousel and then cancels out of the confirmation dialogue box.

So I started a trial of LR4....

Gonna need a new computer to run it

Processing a 8.2mp raw is killing my PC

I think I may stick with PS CS4 as it doesn't tax my computer as much

That's odd because my father in law has similar specs and he is running LR4 just fine. Not blazing or anything but not excruciating slow either. He processes RAW from his D7000

not bad specs. have you reinstalled windows? it just may be bogged down software-wise from years of use. I mean, its not going to be, quick, but it should at least move somewhat.

I'll probably close Firefox before I edit.

my Gateway tablet PC is about 6 years old (yes, I've been into tablets before it was a trend lol), it runs LR4 okay... I could be faster I guess... but either way, I want a new computer soon... it'll be my next big purchase. I DO want to stay with a touch screen, and they can be had for decent price, but if I want the "convertible" touch screens, than the price jumps about ANOTHER $500

Dude, upgrade your RAM, cheapest upgrade you can do for your computer. But I gotta say, that C2D is your primary limiting factor on that machine.

Yea I know.

I think I may upgrade to a SSD as well as I can use that in a new PC as well.

I rolled back from 4.2 to 4.1 due to an issue with the second monitor displaying blurry images, so I hope 4.3 fixes it.

Lightroom is on sale for $100.

If I buy it on my moms Mac mini that is using my apple ID. And then I buy a retina MBP would I have to buy LR again or could I just download it as a purchased app?

Like I said to Miz....just seems like a manual might help.

Of course i've been trying to use the 30day free down load...which has NO help whatsoever.

Maybe It's just me.
