Whoops...my bad, I was looking through the girl on the left's drink and saw what I thought was a reflection. Turns out it's on the other side of her.

oh I see.

there's also a kind of hazy look to the photo that might give you the impression it was shot through something. I think that came from there being a smudge on the lens.

you can particularly see it in the lights

honestly, it's probably more my inexperience...it was just the guy through her glass. Other than that, I love the different emotions captured.

What was the message with the engine shot? What story were you hoping a viewer would see?

It`s an advertisement for K&N. The rest of the shot is blurred out and the focus is on the name of the manufacturer. The silver bar is kind of clean so maybe that is it.

Everything about every picture tells a story. The composition, the choice of focus point, the use of leading lines, the filled/dead space, the foreground element, etc. I am trying to find out what it was he was trying to tell me as the viewer of the photographer. Sometimes the story is not a good one, sometimes it is awesome, sometimes it is abstract and left totally up to the viewer. Technique controls how effective the story telling is.

I'm kinda embarrassed to say that I didn't put TOO much thought into it and since it was black and white, figured I'd post it. I was trying to get a cool angle that kinda showed the intake, strut bar and valve cover...then went B&W to get rid of the traditional red popping on it so the focus wouldn't be the valve cover. Depth of field is mainly because I slapped on the 35MM prime lens and like to stick with F1.8 since it can...but in this instance it was also used because of the low light setting and I didn't want to get the tripod out to shoot higher F stop.

Damn, maybe I did put more thought into it than I gave myself credit for.

EDIT:
And PS, I do appreciate the criticism...that post about the story I'm trying to tell is good food for thought.
You don't learn from praise (unfortunately)

Final thought: Black & White pics of cars is tough to portray as art. Most of our cars with mods and the vast color spectrum that they have beg for color pics to show them off.

I don't feel like every photo tells a story or needs to tell a story. I think there are many photos that don't. There are different kinds of photos and subjects. Some are just static and have nothing to "say". They can spark your curiosity based on the subject matter. The engine shot above, for example, someone might think in their head "their K&N filter looks nicer than the one I have, I wonder what model they have", and maybe they ask. It's not a story but the photo can still pique interest. If you made it your purpose to tell a story with each photo, that could certainly be possible.

Okay, I think you're right about that...I had never thought about telling a story because I primarily shoot fixed objects. I normally, shoot shoot shoot, different angles and this and that...then sort through and any one that I feel visually is titillating, I pick to edit and then post.

Yes.

But whether you intend to "tell a story" or not the viewer will walk away with some perception.

So, if you find an image of an engine titillating...what exactly draws you to it. Think about it when you frame it up, where do you want to draw the viewers attention to the most or the least? What about that engine grabs you that you want to showcase it.

Who ever views your photo will grab their own perception or "Story" from your work...but you can guide them to it as well.

Excellent points, David. I am not sure, I like showing the valve cover of the S2000 since it's all JDM, yo and all...and then found it interesting after the fact to remove the color and take away the red that drew me to it to begin with.

Art is hard.
