these kids asked me to take pics of them in their paintball tournament, and wanted a team picture, so I took the opportunity and tried using strobes in harsh/direct sunlight, something I have been wanting to try (wish I had used a better lens 
)

so first off you will want to set your lens to manual mode put it all the way to infinity then just back it off a little You also need to shoot at 2.8 or faster to get the stars to look like little pins anything higher then 2.8 and the stars will look like blobs lol. Shutter speed I always shoot 20 sec anything higher then 20 sec and you will start getting star trails . ISO I prefer to shoot at 6400 but depending on your camera maybe go with 3200 I have the 5D3 so I can push the iso pretty high without issue. In regards to the milky way you need to pay attention to the moon cycles on or within a week of new moon and you should be good. If there is to much moon light it will blow out your shot and you wont get the detail of the milky way. Also summer solstice is going to be your best bet for seeing the milky way since it is most visible to the Northern hemisphere at that time. You also need to wait about an hour hour and half after sunset for it to be completely dark and obviously get as far away from city lights as possible. If you have any issues finding the milky way Star walk is a good app to help you out.
In regards to processing it can be a little tricky I primarily rely on the curves adjustment in PS I'll open one of those layers and plot a point towards the top of the line that's going thru the histogram and one towards the bottom and then just kind of adjust those 2 until it looks right.
