I understand you received an award for “Spirals” at Macworld. Congratulations! How was this image created and what’s the inspiration behind photographing staircases and shells?
My image, “Spirals”, is a photo composition, created from two photographs combined. The Macworld exhibition is a pretty prestigious deal. Their requirements for selection is that the person who creates the image is a digital artist and that it’s created on a Mac. There’s no real requirement that you start with a photograph. For this image, I sandwiched a photo of a nautilus shell with a photo of a fisheye wide angle capture of a pretty narrow stairwell, seamlessly integrating the two. I am really excited about the exhibit, the catalog, and all the things they’re going to do around it at Macworld.

Speaking of the inauguration, here's another one. Although this one is more interesting from its uniqueness and how it was captured rather than the actual end result.

That NYT pano at full screen is nice, which you could crop into it for closer views.

I miss my 03 CL-S :(
Here's an interesting set of pictures... They took photographs taken during the Nazi siege of Leningrad in WWII and overlaid it on pictures of modern St. Petersburg, maintaining the same location/angles as the WWII pictures.
Pretty eerie as I'm sure people walk those roads and don't think that 65+ years ago the sidewalks they walk on had the bodies of their ancestors strewn about.

Came across this set of B&W ice abstracts while I was searching for examples of Nik Software's Silver Efex Pro program.

Very nice! I love Silver Efex for B&W, it's one of my most used programs. The only downside is it can be quite memory intensive when working on larger tiffs. The results are great though.

Nothing to write home about technically, but just too many strange things about the composition and subjects not to love it.

There are many many fantastic pictures in the "Perpetual Photography Thread" in ArsTechnica. That thread's been closed but there's a follow-on thread called "Son of Perpetual Photography Thread" which is the follow-on.
Just wanted to share those threads since there's so much great stuff there.

Found a photographer on Flickr who does some really nice work and also posts a picture with explanations of the lighting setups.
I love the shots, and the setup photos make it clear how the end result was achieved.
