***Acurazine Photo Contest #25: Painting With Light***

Acurazine Photo Contest #25

The theme for this contest is: "Painting With Light"

The rules for this contest are as follows:

Photos can fall into one of two genres:

----Directed light (light source toward subject)

----Light trails (light source toward camera)

Light sources should be created by YOU. Vehicle trails, etc. do not qualify for this contest unless accompanied by user created light.

-Lighting must be applied in camera and should not be adjusted to any great degree post processing. Tweaks are OK, but the idea is to get it right "in camera" and not create the entire lighting theme in LR or PS.
-The subject of can be anything you deem acceptable.
-You must be the person that took the photos. Previous photos are acceptable as long as you are the one that captured the image.
-One submission per contest.
-Images must be no larger than 900px in any direction. Links to larger images are allowed but you must have one that is under 900px for the poll.
-All contestants must host their own pictures.
-All pictures must have a title.
-While post processing in photoshop is allowed, adding or removing parts of the picture is not. In the event a photo is suspected to be "photochopped," the contestant will be asked to provide the original picture.

Important dates and poll info:

Entries must be submitted to this thread no later than Sunday, October 19th at 6pm PST.

The poll will start on Monday, October 20th . Multiple votes will be allowed.

The poll will close on Monday, October 27th at 6pm PST.

It's easier than you may think.

For the first type, you can use gels over a flash fired (off camera) during a long exposure, or even a flashlight either bare for white light or with a colored filter.

For the second type, simply take a long exposure and use a light source to "paint" what you like into the image.

A tripod or stable place for the camera is key, as most of these exposures are in the the 30 second or longer realm.

Search Flikr for "painting with light" for some cool ideas.

There is a photographer here in arizona that does the painting with the flashlight and gels thing (mostly with cactus at night). I've always wanted to do it, but never got off my ass to go buy gels. Cool theme.

Really, any color inducing (or not) filter in front of a flashlight or strobe/flash will work for this, so it's really easy.

The hard part is figuring out how long of an exposure and how much light to add and for how long to add it to get the desired results.

Gels are pieces of colored or diffusion that were at one time made from a gelatin base.

They are used to go in front of a light source to create an effect be it color correction, diffusion, or add/subtract color.

In the film industry this is standard fare.

My question is how do you do those light trails but not have any trace of the person actually making them.

Move fast, wear dark clothes, never shine the light on yourself.

Sarlacc may have pro equipment, but in all seriousness, if you stuck a flashlight inside a blue bottle and aimed it at a wall, you would get blue light.

GET CREATIVE!

I have a camera and some gels...

I think half the members have way more in terms of "pro equipment" than I do.

Hell, I refuse to own a flash

By what Sarlacc explained, I'm assuming gels are basically those colored 'films' or sheets that go in front of your light source.

....I could be wrong though.

I think there are a couple companies that give away a free swatchbook of gels, usually big enough to cover a flash

I got some from lee filters and roscolux.
I think the lee filter link is http://www.leefilters.com/lighting/contact/
I'm not sure if roscolux is still doing it for free, from the website it looks like the swatchbook costs money now. Some dealers might still have it for free if you look around though.

I think it took a month or so to get mine, so I'm not sure if it'll help for this contest though.

you can try checking out http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...d.php?t=472223 for more information

they should have them or you can try a place such as www.filmtools.com. They sell little party packs.

For a low cost solution, hit up a local craft store for colored cellophane. A few sheets, plus a rubber band over the flash head, and voila! Also, simply indirectly bouncing bare flash off a colored surface will result in a hue change pf the bounced light.

Also, wrap the end of a flash light with the same, and paint the light onto general or specific areas of your scene. Use different lights with different colors too.

just for clarification...this light painting picture can only be ONE shot, right? not multiple ones layered together or placed side-by-side like up above?

....or can it...?
