Moving from San Jose to Palm Spring? Need some honest opinions!

If anyone here is familiar with these 2 places, then I need some opinions.
I have a cousin who lives in Palm Springs for the past 8 years, recently talked to her over the phone and I realized the house over there is so much cheaper than silicone valley, owning a house has always been my dream but it looks like it will never happen if i stay in bayarea. She works at a casino in palm spring and she told me she can easily get me a job there as a supervisor or casino host. I have been in bayarea for the past 17 years, moving to Palm Springs seem like a life changing thing for me. I think so far I have an "OK" job and still going to school, my boss doesnt really care about everyone in the company, he knows all i have is an AA degree so he believes i can't get a job anywhere else! I don't see a career at this job and obviously i can't get a better job anywhere else because I don't have a bachelor degree. Moving to Palm Springs will most likely get me a job at casino and the starting pay for a supervisor is actually more than what i make now (now you no i actually dont make that much here), also being able to own a condo/house. I am still working on my B.S degree but its gonna take a while because I am also working full time. But everything will be different, no friends, no convenience to all the stores that we have in bayarea. I feel like it will be boring as hell in Palm Spring, and yeah the weather condition, San Jose rarely goes over 100F. Some friends told me I shouldn't go because i will not have any sort of career at casino either, i won't learn anything at all (dunno if that's true). This is not like moving to SFO or Santa Cruz or even Salinas, i guess its cuz i am so used to san jose. BUT competition is so high and everything is soooo expensive. I feel like I am surrendering but i don't want to! Yea maybe i should have finished my college when i was a lot younger...sigh!!! I still plan to go to school even if I move to Palm Springs. I dunno.. this is such a big decision for me although I am single and my parents are overseas.

What do you guys think? I feel either way i am taking chances!

well if you can finish your BS in Palm Springs, I say go for it. New friends can be made and I have no idea how Palm Springs is, but if its boring as hell just work on your car or get a real girlfriend haha. if you get a chance to a better life, why not accept? good luck with whatever you end up choosing to do.

Palm Springs can get hot as hell, if you even google the place it's a lot of dry land.... Since you know, it's a desert.

You can get a job anywhere, as long as you are smart.

Yes moving to Palm Springs from San Jose will be life changing no question, yes some things can be cheaper in PS but the climate is totally different almost complete opposite of San Jose. I suggest you do more research on Palm Springs before you make such a move just so you know more of what your possibilities are.
Good luck with your decision

stay where you can finish school then decide. that should be priority. No real opportunity to do that in PS. I am sure a career in casinos can be had. but that degree will make everything easier no matter what you try. Pretty low end jobs in PS primarily catering to wealthy part year residents or tourists. No real industry or business other than hospitality.

As others have stated you might want to do more research on PS. Have you been for a visit yet? Is there a four year university that you can commute to? Will those hospitatility jobs interfere with classes?

I have lived in the lower desert of southern california and agree with everyone else that you need to properly research the area and definately visit. Its not as bad if your willing to commute to the other cities that are close such as Riverside. You did not specify what you like doing, there are a lot of people that like going offroad, snowboarding/skiing at Big Bear Mountain, and plenty of opportunities to go camping. If you can tolerate 120 degree summers then you will be ok. The pass between palm springs and riverside is a funnel for smog since the cooler temps on the west and the hotter temperatures on the east creates a vacuum for smog and plain wind (another reason there are hundreds of windmills in that area. As far as jobs are concerned, it really depends on what your going to school for (or what you really want to doing for a living). There are opportunities to work for the power industry with many power plants and green jobs (windmills, geothermal). It all depends on what your looking for. That's the most I really recall of the area.

just had temps exceeding 120 degrees this past weekend not to mention the humidity, I live about 20 mins from PS in Indio, plus its been a dust storm the last couple days. Not much to do out here, on the education side there's College of the Desert, bout to get my Associates Degree from there, if its ur BA ur seeking I think UCR would be the closest place. im hoping to relocate to San Diego in the next couple years, love the desert but tired of it. hope this helps...

I grew up in Palm Springs my whole life until I took off to Orange County for college immediately after high school. The summers is HOT there (110+ regularly) and BRUTAL during Aug (Humidity + Hot Temps = HELL), but for 8-9 months out of the year, the weather is quite nice, and in the winter, cold. Since you're from San Jose, it'll be a much different cold than your used to. It's a DRY cold as opposed to a humid/wet cold. Think "ICY".

As far as jobs goes, there are not many big corporations with huge business buildings other than casinos. College wise, College of the Desert and a few remote 4 year University buildings is all that is available. UCR and CSSB is a 40-1hr drive away.

That said, I'll never be living there. I've been in love with Orange County since I left the desert, and plan on living here the rest of my life.
